Is Whoopi Goldberg Leaving The View?
Goldberg is joining the popular musical Annie this holiday season, but that doesn’t mean she’s leaving The View for good. She is set to join a touring production of the musical at Madison Square Garden from December 11 – January 5. She will play the evil Miss Hannigan, who runs the orphanage and is the villain in the story for Annie and the other little girls.
The tour will begin with a run in Chicago before arriving at Madison Square Garden. Goldberg is only set to appear on the New York dates.
“I love the theatre, and in my mind, there is no better way to spend the holidays than to get back on stage,” Goldberg said in a statement. “I can’t wait to step into the delicious role of Miss Hannigan and perform for the greatest audiences in the world – in my hometown of New York City.”

The character, despite being a villain, remains a fan favorite for theater fans. She does, after all, get the second biggest song in Annie, “Easy Street.”
Charles Strouse, who co-wrote the score for Annie with the late Martin Charnin, said that “having the iconic Whoopi Goldberg join the company and make her first appearance ever in a production of Annie is a gift to us all! I know Martin and Tom [Thomas Meehan, the late book writer) would be thrilled, too.”
Goldberg is no stranger to theater. She has appeared on Broadway seven times, starting in 1984 with her solo show Whoopi Goldberg. Her last appearance was in 2011 with Sister Act. She has been a host of The View since 2007. There’s been no word yet on whether she’ll pull double duty while she’s starring in Annie or whether she’ll be taking a break from the show while she’s playing the dastardly Miss Hannigan.
The new season of The View will premiere after Labor Day. The show’s current lineup consists of Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Ana Navarro.
