‘The Witches’ Remake Starring Anne Hathaway Set for October 2020 Release Date
Robert Zemeckis’ adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1983 novel “The Witches” will hit theaters on Oct. 16, 2020.
It was reported earlier this month that Oscar winner Anne Hathaway would star as the Grand High Witch, which was played by Anjelica Huston in the first adaptation of the children’s book in 1990. Zemeckis is directing and writing the script based on the book about a boy who stumbles across a coven of child-hating witches who secretly inhabit the world and is forced to stop them even after he’s been transformed into a mouse.
In addition to directing, Zemekis will produce along with Jack Rapke, Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro and Luke Kelly.
Del Toro had previously been attached as director, but had to step down due to scheduling conflicts.

“The Witches” was previously made into a film by Warner Bros in 1990. Though the film gained a cult following, it was a box office flop and was publicly rejected by Dahl prior to his death that year, as the film changed the ending to his book.
Hathaway is currently filming an untitled Todd Haynes film centered around the DuPont chemical company alongside Tim Robbins and Mark Ruffalo. She most recently starred in “Serenity” alongside Matthew McConaughey, which under- performed at the box office. Hathaway also starred in “Ocean’s 8,” and can be seen in the upcoming comedy remake of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” called “The Hustle.”
Zemeckis recently directed Steve Carell in Universal’s “Welcome to Marwen”
