WNBA Star Brittney Griner and Wife Cherelle Welcome Baby Boy—Here's What We Know About His Name

As Phoenix Mercury star center Brittney Griner is busy preparing to compete in the Paris Olympic games as part of the U.S. women's basketball team, she's also spending time celebrating a new addition to her family. Griner recently announced on the CBS sports show We Need to Talk that she and her wife Cherelle had a baby boy on July 8.

When asked on the show how she feels about becoming a new "pops," the 10-time WNBA All-Star answered with a smile, saying, "He's here. 7/8/24. 7 pounds 8 ounces."

Having already decided on the name Bash Raymond for their son, Griner went on to describe her initial reaction to meeting him for the first time.

"They say as soon as you see him, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window. And that's literally what happens."

Bash Raymond is the couple's first child together. And as Griner expresses some discomfort with having to leave him to go and compete in the Olympics, it seems that she and Cherelle picked just the right name for him to hold his own.

As seen in the interview, when CBS news anchor Terrika Foster-Brasby raised the topic by stating, "You're about to be a mom", Griner corrected her with, "Pops."

This subtle, but emphatic correction of language shows Griner's confidence in walking in her identity as an LGBTQ+ parent–and how it often does and will continue to take polite correction when navigating gender stereotypes.

Griner and Cherelle will also likely receive some opinions around what they want their son to call them, which is also another challenge parents face regarding unsolicited input. But with the joyful vibes being put out there already by Griner, it doesn't look like it will knock them off their game at all.
