Woman ‘Smashes the Patriarchy’ by Proposing to Boyfriend Onstage at Firefly Festival

Onstage marriage proposals have become a common occurrence at concerts, but it’s still rare to see a female music fan do the asking. So it was a pleasant surprise when a brave woman named Sarah Jo Carl brought her boyfriend, Scott Cevera, onstage, during L.A. indie-folk band Magic Giant’s Saturday afternoon Lawn Stage set at Dover, Del.’s Firefly Music Festival, and got down on bended knee.

“So, Scott, I’ve got a surprise. I kind of went over this in my head, like, 5 million times, and I didn’t know what to say. But I was thinking a couple months ago about how much I love you, and how much I just want to scream it from the rooftops and just tell everyone — how much I love you and that I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” Carl gushed, as the crowd erupted and Cevera clasped his hands over his face in shock.

“We’re smashing the patriarchy out here!” the kneeling Carl then declared, as the audience cheered and Cevera immediately said yes. Magic Giant frontman Austin Bisnow then congratulated the happy couple and serenaded them with “Glass Heart,” saying it was Carl and Cevera’s favorite song.

“Sarah reached out to us at the festival,” Biznow later told Yahoo Music when asked how this surprise proposal came together. “She was very thorough! I think she hit us up on Facebook, then she reached out to the festival and said she wanted to propose to her boyfriend — and she wanted Magic Giant. The festival said to us, ‘Are you OK with this?’ And we were like, ‘Heck, yeah!’ They said, ‘Do you want to do it low-key?’ We said, ‘No! Let’s do it big! Get her on the stage!'”

Biznow explained that the couple was plucked from the crowd Saturday and Cevera was told they had been “selected randomly to watch the show from the side of the stage. He had no idea.”

Magic Giant instrumentalist Zang said Carl requested that the band play “Glass Heart” because it’s “the song that best represents their relationship.” One of the tune’s key lines is “let’s make history.”

When asked if Magic Giant will be available to perform at the couple’s wedding reception once the date is set, Biznow joked, “Sure — and when they have their firstborn, we’ll be at the bris. We’ll play the bris!” Added Zang, “Or the baptism. Just let us know.”
