Working Title Plotting Pic On Geriatric Masterminds Of Hatton Garden Jewelry Heist

EXCLUSIVE: Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are planning a caper pic about the unlikely gang of retirees that pulled off the daring Hatton Garden jewelry heist of 2015. They’ve closed a deal for a Vanity Fair article by Mark Seal headlined”The Over the Hill Mob,” which was published in the March issue.

The robbery brought a loot haul of up to $300 million, leading to theories that the culprits were a precision team of super-thieves who had pulled off the perfect crime. The actual perpetrators were sitting right under their noses, a group of tough-guy retired criminals in their late 60s and 70s — with all kinds of physical maladies — who were mostly bored until they consulted a bunch of how-to books and figured out a way to pull off one last hurrah over a long weekend in April. They tunneled into the vault with heavy machinery and carted it all away.

It wasn’t quite the perfect crime, though. Closed-circuit cameras eventually sleuthed a white Mercedes that passed the place numerous times, and the robbers also used their cell phones before and after the burglary. Some six weeks after the crime, the police raided the homes of the suspects. One they got just as he was planning to melt down between $2.9 million and $4.4 million in precious metals on the dining room table. One member got away with $15 million, but the rest were caught and recently sentenced. Their downfall? They were analog criminals operating in a digital world, and no match for digital detectives.

Bevan and Fellner will produce the film, and they will lock down a director shortly. WME brokered the deal.
