I was wrong. The Arizona Cardinals are so much fun that Fox dumped Taylor Swift to show them
I was wrong.
Despite my misgivings about whether the Arizona Cardinals would be worth watching this season — a lot of people who know a lot more about football than I do picked them to be the worst team in the NFL — they have made a fool out of me.
Not that this is difficult to do, but the Cardinals’ huge 28-16 upset of the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday just put a bow on it.
But come on. The Cardinals hadn’t won a game so far this season; they were playing for Jonathan Gannon, a new head coach; and Kyler Murray, their supposed franchise quarterback, is still out with a knee injury.
Yeah, well, what about it? This was a great game. It was also great TV. It was fun TV.
Ben Campbell has 'no regrets': He parted ways with KNIX-FM in Phoenix
Fox turned away from Taylor Swift for the Cardinals
How fun? Fox Sports dumped Taylor Swift for it.
OK, that’s not quite what happened. But it’s close.
The point is, whether the Cardinals are blowing leads of historic proportion or pulling off the upset of the season, so far, they have been well worth watching.
The Cardinals went into Sunday’s game nearly a two-touchdown underdog. The undefeated Cowboys had outscored their first two opponents 70-10. This was going to be ugly.
Instead, it was beautiful. Well, pretty, anyway — unless you’re a Cowboys fan, of course.
The Cardinals jumped out to a quick lead, with long runs and good defense.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs, whose star tight end Travis Kelce is or isn’t dating Swift, were quickly on their way to a 41-10 win over the Chicago Bears. Swift was spotted in a luxury box sitting with Kelce’s mother. Spotted repeatedly, in fact, before and during the game, as the media continue to cover this would-be could-be romance like the fall of Saigon.
Seemingly every post-game show worked some of her song titles into its coverage. All good wishes to the happy might-be couple and all, but this might get old, fast.
Swift notwithstanding, the Kansas City game got so out of hand so quickly that Fox, which was broadcasting both games, switched the audience for the Chiefs-Bears game to the much more competitive Cardinals-Cowboys game.
Whoa. Who bails on Taylor Swift? I can’t wait to hear the bitter song she writes about this.
Anyway, back at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, the Cardinals were doing things like kicking a 62-yard field goal at the end of the first half, making tremendous goal-line stands and generally behaving like a team worth watching. Which I will be doing from here on.
It was the kind of game that left broadcasters with questions. Like these:
“Who would have thought?” Joe Davis, the play-by-play announcer, said as the game wound down.
“Who would have called that? Who would have seen that?” Terry Bradshaw said during the post-game show.
The answer to all of these questions is simple: No one. As NBC's Chris Simms put it, this was "probably the shocking upset of the day."
Which is another thing that made it so fun.
Kevin McCabe left TV: Then he became the 'dean' of Arizona high school sports
Finally, the Cardinals didn't blow their lead against the Dallas Cowboys
And exciting, if for all the wrong reasons. During their first game of the season, the Cardinals were beating the Washington Commanders 16-10 at the end of the third quarter. They lost 20-16.
Last week the Cardinals were beating the New York Giants 20-0 at halftime and 28-7 in the third quarter. The Giants came back and won, 31-28 — their biggest comeback since 1949.
Daryl “Moose” Johnston, the Fox analyst working with Davis, called the Cardinals’ inability to hold a lead the team’s Achilles’ heel.
Not this time.
Who knows about next time? Which, by the way, is against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Oct. 1. The 49ers haven’t lost a game this season.
We’ve heard that before. That’s not to say this game will be worth cutting away from Taylor Swift for, but it’ll be worth watching to find out.
How to watch Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers
