New York Critics Laud ‘The Night Alive’, ‘All The Way’ and ‘Fun Home’
The New York Drama Critics Circle named Conor McPherson’s The Night Alive as the best play of 2013-2014; Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron’s Fun Home as the best musical, and Robert Schenkkan’s All The Way as the best new American play. Circle rules say that when the best play is foreign-born, group can also cite an American work, as was done here. The group also voted special citations to the Shakespeare’s Globe all-male productions of Twelfth Night and Richard III, and to playwright Richard Nelson and the company of actors who performed in his Apple Family cycle of plays.
Night Alive, set in Dublin, was a Donmar Warehose production presented by off-Broadway’s Atlantic Theatre Co. Fun Home, a musical adaptation of Alison Bechdel’s autobiographical graphic memoir, was presented at the Public Theater. All The Way, which stars Bryan Cranston as Lyndon Baines Johnson, is a Tony Best Play contender currently running at the Neil Simon.
