It’s fashion week…for kids! Also known as back-to-school season, it’s one of the biggest shopping seasons of the year, second only to the holiday shopping season. Retailers are competing for $27.6 billion in spending from 29 million households, according to a survey by Deloitte.
The average household is expected to spend $286 on clothing and accessories out of a total back-to-school budget of $512. Yahoo Lifestyle’s fashion editor, Julie Tong, joined us in our new New York City studio, to highlight some of the best deals from Amazon (AMZN), Target (TGT), and Walmart (WMT). Check out the video above for some cute and trendy fall styles.
Amazon
Amazon has many kid-friendly labels in stock such as Kid Nation, Spotted Zebra, and Crazy 8. Tong expects preppy fashion to come back in a big way this fall. In the first look, Tong highlights a girl’s grey cardigan from Kid Nation ($24.99) which you can pair with a Crazy 8 faux suede mini skirt ($19.88).
For the boys, a minimalist style is on point for fall. This two-color cotton jersey long-sleeve shirt ($12.95) and Spotted Zebra woven jogger pants ($14) hits all the key style points perfectly.

Target
“A big denim trend we’ve been seeing for fall are jeans that have frayed edges and playful patches and embroideries,” says Tong. You can easily copy this look from Target’s Cat & Jack line for less than $20.
For older girls, between 12 and 15, it’s all about bright colorful plaid. Straight from the high fashion runways earlier this year, Italian fashion house Versace brought back their signature ’80s style plaid suiting, skirts and blazers. To make it wearable for a younger audience, you can buy your daughter a yellow plaid skort ($20) from Target’s new young adult line, Wild Fable. “Pair it with a simple white tee and athletic windbreaker jacket ($28). Before you know it, she’ll be channeling Cher Horowitz from “Clueless,” says Tong.
The color-block look is also big trend that continues to be popular. Perfect for the cooler weather, this Cat & Jack boy’s long-sleeve hoodie combines a bold print with an orange and white color-block style, paired nicely with comfortable go-to navy Chino pants — both priced at $16.99.
Walmart
“Western style is coming back in a big way as seen at high-fashion catwalk shows like Coach and Calvin Klein,” says Tong. That means western flannel shirts are a must. You can easily get one from Walmart’s new children’s label, Wonder Nation. The shirt and jeans both cost under $10.
Speaking to the fall floral trend, Walmart has a cute Wonder Nation knit bomber jacket and t-shirt combo for just $12.98. You can mix and match that top layer with a patched-up denim jacket ($14.94).
