6 Foods We'd Like To "Consciously Uncouple"

Kerry Acker

Like certain celebrity couples, some food creations and pairings just aren’t meant to be.

Here are a few that we’re voting to consciously uncouple.

1. Over-the-Top Sugary Fast-Food Breakfast Sandwiches. We are huge fans of salty and sweet combos, but the whole bacony/sugary breakfast sandwich thing has gotten way out of hand. (We’re looking at you, McGriddles.) Take the above Dunkin Donuts’ Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich, for example (seriously, please take it). Though the idea of bacon and eggs sandwiched between two slices of glazed doughnuts sounded promising—and the item has gotten some positive reviews—we stand with the folks at Gothamist: Ultimately this badboy just does not work. Too soggy, too artificial-tasting, and, worst of all, sad, sad bacon.

2. Chocolate Eclairs and Hot Dogs

Stop. No seriously, just stop.

3. Chicken, Potato Chips, and Pepsi: We are speechless.

4. Burgers and Doughnuts:

Gosh, we love us some doughnuts—and a good burger, of course. But the doughnut burger, a.k.a. Luther burger—popularized by Paula Deen and composed of a beef patty, bacon, cheese, and two glazed doughnuts—is a bridge and a heart attack too far.

5. Edamame and Chocolate:

Trader Joe’s, we love you so, so much, and you do such amazing things with chocolate. But we can’t just get behind this one.

6. Cinnamon and Raisins:

This one is highly controversial, but why must every delicious cinnamon bread, bun, and bagel be sullied by the presence of raisins? For this pairing, “conscious uncoupling” might not go far enough—so I’m pulling for full-on divorce.

Which food mashups/pairings would you like to consciously uncouple?
