10 Important Moments You May Have Missed from the 2018 Emmys
The 2018 Emmys were... not great. But the night wasn't a complete loss! Here, why Sandra Oh, Hannah Gadsby, and a surprise proposal made three hours in front of the TV on a Monday night worth it.
Henry Winkler nabs the prize for Daddies everywhere.
After winning his first Emmy (after six nominations in 42 years) for Barry, Winkler sent his adult children to bed with two iconic words: "Daddy won!"
I'm rooting for everybody daddy.
Sandra Oh should've hosted the whole thing.
Lead Actress in a Drama nominee and Killing Eve maestro Oh joined Andy Samberg to present the award for outstanding comedy directing. In just a few seconds, Oh ripped up the cue card, dropped a La La Land reference, and made the case for hosting every forthcoming award ceremony from here to eternity. The woman can do no wrong.
Regina King wins, is stunned.
I should've known something special would happen when Ru Paul and Leslie Jones gathered together to present the award for lead actress in a limited series or TV movie.
Jones did this:
And winner Regina King did this:
Her reaction was genuine and perfect.
Alex Borstein goes braless in her 19-year-old wedding dress to accept her award.
Borstein stripping off her wrap and declaring, "I went without the bra" during her acceptance speech just shot straight to the top of my 2018 mood board.
Also, the dress is from her 1999 wedding. She got divorced in 2014. An icon among us.
Teddy Perkins makes an unsettling appearance.
Atlanta received eight nominations ahead of tonight's Emmys but the Academy snubbed the show on all counts, including the two noms for its brilliant "Teddy Perkins" episode. But despite the losses, Perkins himself managed to make an appearance at tonight's ceremony; rumor has it Lakeith Stanfield took over the role from Donald Glover for the night.
Oscar-director-turned-Emmy-winner Glenn Weiss proposes onstage, everyone believes in love again.
In the most I-can't-believe-this-hasn't-happened-yet moment of the night, Oscar director Weiss proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen, while accepting the award for directing a variety special.
I'm not going to describe it, just watch it and enjoy those real emotions defrosting your cold, dead heart:
Has Sterling K. Brown ever been more thrilled? LMK.
Hannah Gadsby graces the Emmys with her presence.
If you haven't watched Gadsby's Netflix comedy special Nanette, you're missing out on one of the most important works of art to come out of this terrible year. Gadsby hit the stage at tonight's Emmys to present best directing for a drama, a quick reminder that she's eligible for next year's Emmys and we should launch her campaign now. A tidbit from her less-than-60-seconds onstage:
"Hashtag not all men...but a lot of 'em. It is just jokes but, what are jokes, these days? We don't know. Nobody knows what jokes are. Especially not men."
RuPaul's Drag Race earns first best reality competition Emmy.
It's hard to remember a time when RuPaul and the "140 drag queens we have released into the wild" weren't dominating TV screens, but tonight, the show picked up its very first best reality competition Emmy, bringing Drag Race's grand total to five Emmys for the season. The show also won best reality host for a competition program, as well as best directing for a reality program, best costumes, and best hairstyling at last week's Creative Arts Emmys.
The Americans earned two Emmys for its outstanding final run.
A lot of people are upset Keri Russell and The Americans were snubbed for lead actress in a drama and best drama, respectively, for the show's final season, but perhaps we should focus on the good? Lead actor Matthew Rhys and writers Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg took home awards tonight, and that's worth... something.
Claire Foy wins Best Actress for The Crown.
I know, I know Sandra Oh was stellar in Killing Eve Season 1, and I will lead her campaign for Season 2 with my dying breath. But Claire Foy did masterful work on Seasons 1 and 2 of The Crown and deserved top prize before handing the baton to Olivia Colman and co. Thank you and good night.
