The 100 Best Pizzerias in the World, According to a New Ranking
Anthony Mangieri has regained his crown. His Una Pizza Napoletana on New York’s Lower East Side has been named the best pizzeria in the world by the organization 50 Top Pizza, a year after sliding from the top spot.
Mangieri, the New Jersey native, has been making pizza for more than 30 years, moving his N.Y.C. joint to San Francisco before returning to Manhattan in 2018. His pizzas a rooted in a Neapolitan style, but over the decades, his natural-leavened pies have changed as he constantly tinkers with the recipe of his poofy-crusted creations. The victory comes on the heels of Mangieri topping the same association’s ranking of the 50 best pizza joints in America earlier this year for the third time in a row. Last year, a pair of Italian restaurants—Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria in Naples and I Masanielli in Caserta—shared the top ranking, but in 2024 they slid down to share the second spot instead.

The organization behind the annual rankings, 50 Top Pizza, began in 2014 when a trio of Italians—Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro, and Albert Sapere—wanted to shine a light on exceptional pies. In 2017, they released their first guide, and now the rankings are determined by surveys and in-person visits to pizzerias. The ascent of their rankings has matched the growth of high-end pizza, where people traverse the world to find great pies in much the way a certain class of diner chases restaurants on the World’s 50 Best list. Now, the humble pie has gone haute, with pizzaiolos turning the kids party staple into the core of fine dining-esque tasting menus.
The top of this year’s 10 was rounded out by The Pizza Baron 38th in Tokyo, Confine in Milan, Napoli on the Road in London, Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco, I Tigli in San Bonifacio, Italy, Satoria Panatieri in Barcelona, 50 Kalo in Naples, and Rome’s Seu Pizza Illuminati.
In terms of patriotic bragging rights, Italy was the country with the most pizzerias in the top 100 (actually, because of ties, there are 102 restaurants listed), with the U.S.A. and its 15 ranked restaurants a distant second. The city with the most pizzerias on the list is, no surprise, Naples, with five, followed by Caserta just north of Naples having four. Last year five New York places made the list, but with Manhattan’s Song’ E Napule falling out of the rankings, that number dropped to four. But don’t worry, you don’t need a bunch of Italians to tell you there are great pizzas in N.Y.C.
