12 Dentist-Recommend Electric Toothbrushes for 2023
We're sharing our dentist-chosen top electric toothbrushes for every budget.
While a manual toothbrush can certainly get the job done when it comes to your daily brushing routine, there are just some areas in which electric toothbrushes excel.
Electric toothbrushes for instance, typically include oscillating, rotating and pulsating technology that does all the hard work for you. They also feature timers, different brushing modes and pressure sensors. These are all areas in which your manual version, sadly, cannot compete.
“Both manual and electric toothbrushes are effective in plaque removal. However, many people do not have the proper brushing technique and when using a manual toothbrush, may miss spots that an electric toothbrush can help with” says Fatima Khan, DDS, of Texas-based Altus Dental.
Bottom line? If 2023 is the year you plan to step up your dental hygiene game, then you may want to consider some of the electric options on the market.
Of course, the search for an electric toothbrush can be daunting. They run the gamut in price from just $10 or $15 to hundreds of dollars. And similar to shopping for a car, they range in bells and whistles from a value-oriented Honda to an Aston Martin. The good news is you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a reliable and effective electric toothbrush, says Khan.
What is the best electric toothbrush?
It’s natural to want to know what the absolute best choice is when it comes to any purchase, electric toothbrushes included. However, the answer to this question is not exactly straightforward, says Khan.“The best electric toothbrush depends on your individual needs,” Khan explains, noting that while some may want or need a toothbrush with all the bells and whistles, others may not. You want a toothbrush that fits your unique needs. “If surface staining and plaque removal are your primary focus, find a toothbrush with an oscillating head,” adds Khan. If you have gingival recession, you will want a toothbrush that uses sonic waves (vibrations) to break off food or plaque at the gum line and has pressure sensor to prevent further gingival damage.”
Is Philips Sonicare better than Oral B?
Another question that doesn’t necessarily come with a neatly packaged answer, says Khan. Both Sonicare and Oral B are reputable brands that offer a number of options with various features and at various price points, says Khan. But there’s no denying the competition between the two is fierce. “They are always in constant competition to bring the next best technology on the market,” explains Khan. “Generally, Oral B may have a lower price point and Sonicare may have more brush modes and features. But there is no conclusive study stating one brand is much better than the other.”
Do electric toothbrushes work better than a regular toothbrush?
And here we are, back to where we started our discussion. Are electric toothbrushes better than regular toothbrushes? Khan says many people see better results with an electric toothbrush. So yes, your manual toothbrush will remove plaque. But it won’t do all of the other things an electric toothbrush does to improve your dental hygiene.“The key features that make an electric toothbrush special are that they have oscillating, rotating and pulsating technology,” says Khan. “The brush does the motions for you. They may have a two-minute timer and they may have different modes and pressure sensors.”We've put together a collection of electric toothbrushes to help you make the best choice.
