13 Reasons Why announce season two release date with new trailer

Netflix's most controversial teen television series has announced when its long-awaited second series will return to the streaming service. 

Season two of 13 Reasons Why, which examines the suicide of a schoolgirl through tape recordings made before her death, will be made available in its entirety on May 18.

The announcement was made by Netflix on Twitter, with a perturbing new trailer that shows characters from 13 Reasons Why's first season, such as the villainous Bryce, teacher Mr Porter and schoolmates Jessica, Tony and of, course, Clay, in freeze frames with portentious glimpses of the future.

The trailer suggests more crime-based drama will unfold with a final warning: "The tapes were just the beginning". 

The show attracted international criticism when it launched on Netflix last year for its gratuitous portrayal of the suicide of a young person and the situations that led to it.

Ahead of the second season, 13 Reasons Why's producers have now introduced a minute-long warning card that suggests viewers watch the show with a "trusted adult".
