When you’re after full and voluminous lashes but your natural pair are falling short (or sparse, for that matter), faux eyelashes go the distance. The best magnetic lashes define and enhance your eyes without damaging your lashes, so you’ll score fuller fringe now and later.

More from WWD

Older iterations of faux eyelashes felt stiff and heavy on the eyes, but brands have pushed boundaries to create great false eyelashes that look natural and feel as light as a coat of mascara. You can choose from wispy, long styles and short, voluminous strips (and everything in between). While it’s easier than ever to find a great pair of faux eyelashes, applying them is where things can get a bit tricky. That’s where magnetic lashes come into play.

Traditional fake lashes require a generous coat of eyelash glue to hold in place. Not only is eyelash glue a ticking time bomb — apply the strip lashes too soon, and the lashes won’t set; wait too long, and they won’t fully adhere — but they also risk pulling out your natural eyelashes when you remove your faux strips. Magnetic lashes, on the other hand, are as easy as applying eyeliner — literally. Most magnetic false eyelashes adhere directly to a magnetized eyeliner that holds the strip of faux lashes in place. So all you have to do is trace magnetized eyeliner along the root of your natural lashes, place the faux lashes on top, then gently pinch them in place to lock them in. The seams of the faux lashes are dotted with tiny magnets that attract to the oppositely charged eyeliner, holding them in place until you whip out your makeup remover.

To select the best magnetic eyelashes and uncover tips on applying them for a long-lasting effect, we spoke to makeup artist Gilbert Soliz, optometrist and founder of Line of Sight Dr. Jennifer Tsai, celebrity makeup artist and brand founder Jenny Patinkin, and makeup artist Suzanne Perez. Read on to find a new favorite set of falsies.

Velour Lashes Magnetic Effortless Lashes – Opposites Attract

Best Magnetic Lashes for Convenience

  • Style: Flared

  • Length: Medium

  • Lash material: Faux mink

  • What’s included: 1 set of lashes and carrying case

When it comes to applying false lashes, it can take a lot of practice to get it right. If you also have some trimming to do, the entire process can feel tedious and quickly become frustrating. For anyone who doesn’t have the time or patience for either, there’s Velour. The brand’s faux mink magnetic lashes are made from premium synthetic fiber, with each little hair measuring anywhere from 5 to 15 millimeters long. With a .75-length magnetic lash band, no trimming is required, and because the lash band consists of eight strong hold magnetics, anchoring is also unnecessary. All you have to do is swipe on Velour’s 3-in-1 Lash & Go eyeliner (sold separately) that triples as a liner, glue, and magnet, and attach.

What reviewers say: “I love these lashes! As always, the application is super easy, I can’t believe it takes less than a minute to finish. I am loving the lash style and material. These lashes give my eye the glamour and “wow” factor, especially when I wake up puffy.”

Arishine Magnetic Eyeliner & Eyelashes Kit

Best Variety

  • Style: Wispy to full volume

  • Length: Extra-short to long

  • Lash material: Silk

  • What’s included: Five pairs of lashes, two tubes of magnetic eyeliner, and applicator tweezers

Arishine lashes are an Amazon bestseller: The brand’s original kit racked up over 27,000 reviews, securing itself as a best-seller, but has since been reimagined and redistributed in sleek, new packaging. The complete set consists of five pairs of magnetic lashes  — ranging in styles from natural to full-glam  — a set of tweezers to assist application, and two tubes of waterproof, magnetic eyeliner. The eyeliner is intensely waterproof, so you may need a few swipes of makeup remover to take it off after wear. But the benefit is that you don’t have to worry about your lashes lifting or sliding during wear time.

What reviewers say: “Absolutely love these lashes. They’re so versatile and easy to use, especially for a novice like myself. Application is quick and they’re comfy to wear. They don’t dry out my contacts like some glue lashes. I’m now on my 18th use of one set and honestly they’re as good as new. Highly recommend.”

Earller Magnetic Lashes and Eyeliner Kit

Also Consider Budget Buy

  • Style: Wispy, cat-eye, and full volume

  • Length: Short to long

  • Lash material: Synthetic fibers

  • What’s included: 10 pairs of lashes, two tubes of magnetic eyeliner, and application tweezers

To get the most bang for your buck, we’ve scouted out a magnetic lash kit that includes not one, not five, but 10 pairs of magnetic lashes, that, altogether, retail for under $15. Each pair from Earller offers either a 3D or 5D finish and comes in natural, long or short lash lengths. Each lash is handmade, and each band contains five magnets that adhere to the included magnetic liner, a third-generation formulation that ensures the strongest hold on your lashes. The liner is also waterproof, scent-free and hypoallergenic, so sensitive skin types can wear these pairs comfortably.

What reviewers say: “These stayed on from 6 AM (when I left to go to job number 1) to midnight (when I when I came home from job number 2) and not a single time did I need to reapply the liner to make them stick. I didn’t wake up with the pesky liner on my face. For those that use magnetic liner, the liner can be a pain to wipe off and most likely will still be on the next day with clumps on your lashes. I was shocked that I woke with none! It took only one face wash. I am super impressed and the variety of shapes and sizes is fun.”

How Do Magnetic Lashes Work?

According to Soliz, magnetic lashes “contain micro magnets along the strip of the lash that allow them to adhere to the lash line using magnetic eyeliner that contains iron oxide.” Iron oxide is commonly found in tinted sunscreens and cosmetic products, so it’s generally safe to use. Most of these faux lashes rely on a magnetic eyeliner that’s oppositely charged to the magnets on the base of the lashes, therefore allowing the lashes to lock onto your skin without glue. Other forms of magnetic lashes sandwich your natural fringe with top and base faux lash strips featuring oppositely charged magnets; these are trickier to apply but are a safer option for those with extra sensitive eyelids.

Are Magnetic Lashes Safe to Use?

In a word, yes. However, given that the eye is one of the most sensitive areas of the human body, optometrist and founder of Line of Sight Dr. Jennifer Tsai tells WWD there are some potential concerns you should be aware of. For example, because magnetic lashes can be heavy on the lid, regular use could lead to loss of natural lashes. What’s more, they can cause a corneal abrasion — scratching on the surface of your cornea, aka the clear, protective layer of your eye — though Tsai says this rarely occurs with false lashes.

In fact, according to Tsai, because magnetic eyeliners are designed with tiny iron oxides that adhere to the magnet on the false lashes, magnetic lashes, unlike traditional alternatives, can “reduce lash loss” since they do not sit on your natural lashes. The downside to magnetic eyeliners, however, is that the iron oxide found in them does have “pigment-containing minerals” that can potentially cause staining and skin darkening, Tsai warns. She adds that those with sensitive skin can also develop an allergic reaction to the magnetic glue, including contact dermatitis, blepharitis, swollen itchy lids and eczema.

That being said, overall, Tsai tells WWD she does recommend using magnetic lashes over traditional faux lashes, but in moderation. “[Just remember to] always thoroughly remove the eyeliner and lashes after each use.”

How To Apply Magnetic Lashes:

If you have a non-liner style (aka, a top and bottom strip that sandwiches your lashes), Patinkin says there are two ways to go about it. “You can use a tool that you use to position them over the roots of your lash line and then pinch them together, or you can hold the upper lashes in place and manually snap the lower lashes into place,” she tells WWD. If you’re using magnetic lashes that are designed to adhere to a magnetic liner, then follow the steps below:

  1. Prep your skin: Wash your face and eyes with a gentle cleanser for dry skin or a cleanser for oily skin.

  2. Do your makeup: Faux lashes should be the final step in your makeup routine. Perez advises applying any makeup you plan on wearing, including foundation, concealers for contouring, and your favorite shade from your eyeshadow palette, beforehand. Always swipe on mascara before applying false lashes; brushing it on after can tug off your faux lashes.

  3. Line your lashes: “Apply the [magnetic] liner as close to the upper lash line as you can,” says Patinkin. Go with two coats to ensure the faux lashes fully seal onto your natural lash line.

  4. Apply the falsies: Patinkin says to place the strip of lashes directly on top of the eyeliner. To seal them in, either gently pinch the faux lashes to your natural ones using clean fingertips, or use a pair of faux lash tweezers to apply pressure.

How to Care for Magnetic Lashes

The first step to extending the life of your faux lash set is removing them carefully. Gentle peel the lashes away, pulling from the side of the lash that’s closest to your ear in toward your nose. (To remove any excess liner from your eyelids, swipe a Q-tip dunked in eye makeup remover or cleansing balm.) It’s important to keep your lashes sanitary if you plan on wearing them multiple times; this will mitigate any risks of eye infections or irritation. The easiest way to sanitize the faux lashes is by dipping them in rubbing alcohol and using a Q-tip to remove any adhesive or makeup. From there, Perez says, “let them dry in a clean area or container for future use.”

How We Chose the Best Magnetic Lashes

To select the best magnetic eyelashes on the market, we reached out to experts with different areas of expertise, including an optometrist and multiple professional makeup artists. We used their input to inform our selections on this list, considering factors like the lash material and style, how many wears you can expect from the set, and the quality of the magnetic eyeliner, if included. We also combed through reviews to ensure the options here work well for different eye shapes and sizes. We made sure to include a variety of lash styles to suit different occasions and preferences.
