17 Fans Hospitalized Following Ed Sheeran Concert

Outdoor events can sometimes be risky, especially during hot seasons.

Over the weekend, 17 people were hospitalized after seeking medical attention during Ed Sheeran's Pittsburgh concert, mostly due to "heat-related issues," although there were also "some falls, one seizure, and two cardiac arrest patients."

"Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS personnel working during the Ed Sheeran concert received 37 calls for service, with 17 transports to the hospital," Pittsburgh's Public Safety information officer Cara Cruz wrote in a press release Sunday, July 9.

The two cardiac arrest patients included a worker who was "tearing down the setup inside the stadium" and a paramedic from an outside agency who was leaving the venue.

The "Shape of You" artist has been on his Mathematics Tour, performing at the Acrisure Stadium in the Pennsylvania city on Saturday, July 8.

As for the weather conditions during the show, Pittsburg temperatures had only a high of 72 degrees during the day with a low of 62 degrees in the evening, however, humidity levels reached 92% by the end of the night, according to World Weather.

Since muggy weather can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, it makes sense that so many people would have a hard time handling the climate.

"In humid conditions, the air becomes populated by hydrogen and nitrogen as well as oxygen, and our lungs have to work harder to get oxygen from the air," according to Health Partners, which explained in-depth why certain weather can make you feel sick.

"Ultimately, high humidity throws the body into overdrive to cool itself. And with all that extra work, body temperature can rise,” said Marny Benjamin, MD, an emergency medicine doctor at Methodist Hospital, adding that in the process, "it actually wears on our internal processes.”

Let this serve as a reminder to take the proper health precautions and always stay hydrated before hitting that next festival or outdoor event!
