Why 20-year-old Kylie Jenner's pregnancy is beautiful — but an exception

Congratulations are in order for the newest mother in the Kardashian-Jenner clan — 20-year-old Kylie Jenner. After announcing the birth of her “beautiful” baby girl with boyfriend Travis Scott on Instagram on Sunday, the youngest Jenner posted a video sharing never-before-seen footage from her pregnancy journey. The emotional video has people sharing their happy tears with social media, in addition to their ever-growing baby fever. But there are a few things to consider when gushing over Jenner’s glorified pregnancy, in comparison to the average person’s.

In the first confirmation of her pregnancy, and birth, given by Jenner herself, the lip kit mogul apologized to fans for keeping them in the dark. To make up for it, she released new details, photos, and video footage of what we all missed throughout the past nine months — and there’s no denying that the young mom is on cloud nine.

“Pregnancy has been the most beautiful, empowering, and life changing experience I’ve had in my entire life,” Jenner wrote in her revealing post, “and I’m actually going to miss it.”

But the most important parts of what she shares with her more than 102 million followers is the acknowledgment of her vast support system, and her knowledge of the effects of potential stress to her baby.

“I appreciate my friends and especially my family for helping me make this special moment as private as we could,” she shares. “I knew my baby would feel every stress and every emotion so I chose to do it this way for my little life and our happiness.”

The stability that surrounds Jenner, both emotional and financial, is evident throughout the video, which is now trending No. 1 on YouTube. However, it’s important for the more than 27 million people who have watched it to keep these things in mind. From one reality television star to another, Dina Manzo from The Real Housewives of New Jersey had her first child at age 22, and she tweeted in response to Jenner’s video. “Having a baby at 20 is not all silk PJ’s & flower walls. Most kids don’t have the $ and support you’re fortunate enough to have.”

According to adolescent, child, and family psychologist Barbara Greenberg, the fact that Jenner is privileged enough to experience her pregnancy and childbirth as she did is no reason to shame her. But it is something to keep in mind when looking at the 20-year-old’s own journey as a learning experience for others.

“The vast majority of young women do not have the emotional and financial resources to get through this,” Greenberg says. “Having and raising an infant at any age is stressful and requires a large social support system and resources. And at 20, when you’re still young, it’s even harder.”

For Jenner, who runs her own multimillion-dollar cosmetics company, age is seemingly just a number, as a result of her extraordinary life. However, her ability to avoid some of the negative circumstances that many young mothers face doesn’t discount the fact that she’ll need a surplus of support for the unprecedented responsibility of motherhood.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to young women and tell them that while little babies are very cute, they really need to keep in mind that this is a life-altering experience,” Greenberg explains, “and without the resources that you need, it will be a very stressful experience for both you and the baby.”

As Jenner’s own mom, Kris, explains in the video, “It definitely takes a village.” And luckily, Jenner has that village at her disposal. Being pregnant alongside her older sister Khloé Kardashian and overlapping with Kim Kardashian‘s surrogate’s pregnancy, in addition to the extreme support from the rest of her family, and Scott’s, the youngest Kardashian-Jenner sister was far from alone over the past nine months.

Some of the most unwavering support came from Jenner’s best friend, Jordyn Woods, who also offered some wise words acknowledging the uniqueness of her friend’s pregnancy.

“When you’re 20 years old, you’re just figuring out your life,” Woods tells the camera, speaking to Jenner’s daughter. “You don’t know what you want, you’re an indecisive teenager, and you’re just becoming a young adult. And there was one thing that your mom knew for sure. And that was you.”

The sentiment, which recognizes both the mentality of most young women and Jenner’s own path, sums it up as best as one could. Although motherhood may work out for 20-year-old Jenner, it’s a difficult journey, and the experiences of one of media’s most fascinating personas shouldn’t solely influence others.
