‘Harry Potter’ fans confused by ‘newly discovered’ scene: ‘This was never in the movie’

A “Harry Potter” fan is dividing social media users after sharing a video of a scene that many say they can’t remember watching.

The clip, shared on TikTok by a user named Kristina Marie Claire, was recorded during a Syfy channel showing of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” Claire’s video shows her reaction while watching one scene early in the film, which she says left her “thrown for a loop.”

In the scene, Harry, Ron, Hermione and the rest of Hogwarts are welcoming visitors from other wizarding schools, whose students perform a series of elaborate magic acts as they arrive. After that, Claire’s moment of now-shared confusion begins.

“So then Hogwarts does this thing that I don’t remember happening at all,” she says in her clip.

That “thing” is, essentially, a musical number. The entire student body breaks into a Hogwarts-themed song, with headmaster Dumbledore leading his school through a series of magically drawn lyrics.

Claire says in the clip that despite having seen the movie several times, she has no recollection of the scene or the song, which features lyrics like: “Hogwarts, Howgarts, hoggy warty Hogwarts, teach us something please.”

It turns out Claire wasn’t alone in her reaction. Her video, which has been viewed nearly 500,000 times, drew countless comments from equally confused fans.

“That’s definitely not on the DVDs!!! I’ve seen the movies a million times. Huge HP fan…what is the hell is going on?!” one user commented.

“I… am so confused????? i have seen these movies front to back since i was 8 so many times and IVE NEVER SEEN THIS.” another added.

“OMG! It was never in the movie! What the hell?!” another added.

Some users suggested that the scene was an example of the “Mandela Effect,” a phenomenon in which a group of people claims to have a shared, false memory. The phenomenon is named after an early example of its occurrence, in which thousands of people claimed to remember South African leader Nelson Mandela dying in the 1980s (he actually died in 2013).

Other “Harry Potter” fans had a more grounded technical explanation, suggesting that the singalong was part of an extended version or a deleted scene that was added for TV syndication. Several commenters backed up that theory by saying they did, in fact, remember the song.

“On the Syfy channel they added all of the deleted scenes back into the movies. they did that same on freeform with the twilight movies,” one user claimed.

“Deleted scene. There is another part in one of the movies where you can hear Ron and Hermoine singing it,” another added.

As a few users also pointed out, the Hogwarts song traces back to the “Harry Potter” books. Students sing the tune during the first entry in the series, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Regardless of its origins, some fans felt the deleted scene should have remained that way.

“There’s a reason why they cut it,” one user joked.
