21 Tuxedo Dresses to Wear That Would Make Meghan Markle Proud
And Billy Porter, too!
When searching for a tuxedo dress, lines are often blurred — is it simply a long blazer? A buttoned-up jacket? A fancy dress with buttons? With little to no discernible differences between those three clothing items, how one defines a tuxedo dress, like much of fashion, is ultimately up to person actually wearing it. But if we really had to define it, we surmise that it's a structured dress — or like a long, tailored blazer — which can be worn to an upscale event without that awful feeling of being underdressed.
Recently, we've been blessed with a plethora of examples in our effort to understand the elusive look: Meghan Markle has mastered it, often spotted during public appearances in a tuxedo dress that defies the royal tradition of a two-piece suit. Actor Billy Porter halted the red carpet and spun it on its head when he arrived at the 2019 Oscars in what is perhaps the truest definition of a tuxedo dress, designed by Christian Siriano.
And while we may not have nearly as many occasions as Markle wearing a tuxedo dress or another dazzling opportunity as Billy Porter's red carpet moment, there are still plenty of ways to incorporate the tuxedo dress into your own fancier attire. Look at the gallery below to see all of it in its many iterations, from sleeveless versions to fuchsia pink hues.
