5 quirky Airbnbs in Central PA include a shoe, a beer can house, a treehouse and a bank
Need a weekend getaway? There are plenty of unusual air bed and breakfasts, or Airbnbs, right in your backyard, including a cube, a shoe and even a beer-themed hideaway in the woods.
Here are five fun Airbnbs to experience in Central Pennsylvania:
Brewhouse Mountain: York Haven
Brewhouse Mountain is a nature and beer lover's paradise in York Haven. In this fun Airbnb, nearly every inch of wall space is filled with vintage beer cans from around the world, antique bottles, lithographs, neon signs and much more vintage brewery memorabilia. The beer can collection, according the rental's website, is the largest of its kind in the world.
According to owner Jeff Lebo, the house was built in 1998 and it was opened as a short-term rental in 2012.
"Short-term rental made the most sense for us and also gives our guests more flexibility," Lebo said. "During Covid, our Brewhouse Mountain in York Haven was busier than ever, probably due to the fact that people were not traveling overseas and wanted a safe and private place to gather with their family and friends."
Lebo said he has been acquiring antique and vintage brewery collectibles since 1975 and has amassed the largest collection in the world.
"Brewhouse Mountain houses the collection and is probably the most unusual Airbnb in which you will ever stay," he said. "It is a beer-themed house and people really love staying there."
Haines Shoe House: Hellam Township
There was a nice lady who lived in a shoe - or at least stayed in one on vacation, because the historic Haines Shoe House can now be booked as a short-term rental.
The iconic house visible from Route 30 east of York was built in 1948 and it has been a has been a honeymoon suite, a vacation spot for elderly couples, an ice cream shop and a tourist attraction over the years.
After recent renovations, it is approximately 1,500 square-feet and features 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a living room, kitchen/dinette combination and a recreation room. There are four beds across the three rooms that sleep six. The rooms have been named "Shoelace Space," "Instep Suite" and "Ankle Abode." All rooms are filled with shoe memorabilia.
Aside from the fun interior, the vacation rental offers an outdoor fire pit, hot tub and a picnic area.
Reservations can be made via Vrbo.
Lothlorien Tree House: Mount Joy
Visit Middle Earth without leaving Lancaster County when you book a stay at the Lothlorien Tree House in Mount Joy.
This tree house (yes, a real one) offers some unusual features, such as a 20-foot sculpture of Treebeard and a 110-foot suspension bridge. There is also an outdoor shower and kitchen, indoor fireplace, skylights, Tolkien books and LOTR games, as well as a creek and a large fire pit. If you really want to lean into the LOTR theme, you can even rent costumes, hire a Gandalf impersonator for a fireworks show, and feast on lembas bread.
Blake Ringenberg, co-owner of the treehouse, said the journey to creating this hideaway started a little over four years ago when he and his wife, Gretchen, wanted to create a space that was tranquil and calming for their therapy patients.
"It was just a weird project that kind of morphed into what it is now," Ringenberg said. "We didn't have a clear view when we began, and it just kind of happened."
Ringenberg said all of the materials for the build were bought at the Habitat for Humanity Restore and the details, such as an Elrond carving and a Galadriel towel rack, were carefully curated from artisans, some even from Ukraine.
"It was interesting to get packages from artists in the Ukraine, because even in the midst of war, people were still making art," he said.
The Ringenbergs had to apply for permits at the state level, to ensure that their treehouse met all state safety codes. The home is also off-grid and runs on alternative energy.
The Bank House: Marietta/Maytown
If you have ever dreamed of sleeping in a bank, you can in Marietta - minus a bed of cash, of course. The Old Maytown Bank, originally built in 1910, has been remodeled for romantic getaways. While the rental is in Maytown, Airbnb has the property listed in Marietta.
The bank lobby has been converted to a living room, the conference room has been transformed into a bedroom and the old bank vault is now a mini museum. The home also offers a small kitchen and combined bath and laundry. There are mahogany archways throughout the rental to give it a luxurious feel.
