A cut above: The best chef's knife we've ever tested is almost 40% right now
Looking sharp! A quality 8-inch chef's knife doesn't come cheap, but you can save $59 on this editor-approved pick from Global.
The home editors at Yahoo take our jobs very seriously, and when our resident culinary-products expert, Lisa Schweitzer, tested the best chef's knives of 2024, you better believe she was slicing and dicing like she was on an episode of Chopped. Lisa considered dozens of options for her testing pool, including knives from Wüsthof, Misen and Victorinox, but in the end one knife reigned supreme: the Global 8" Chef's Knife. And right now, it's $100, which is almost 40% off its usual price. Talk about a price cut!
No matter how you slice it, this chef-quality blade is worth the money, especially with a price-slash like this.
Why is this a good deal? ??
A high-quality chef's knife can cost you a pretty penny (it's not unusual to see them at $200 or much, much more). Even at its regular price of $159, this Global knife would be worth it — it's crafted end to end from a single piece of ultra-durable stainless steel — so snagging one at a markdown like this is a total no-brainer. A good chef's knife can last a lifetime, and it makes meal prep infinitely quicker.
Why do I need this? ??
Anyone who cooks at home needs at least one good knife, and a chef's knife is a great place to start because it can tackle a multitude of tasks. And you'll want one that starts super sharp and stays that way. (It sounds counterintuitive, but you're actually more likely to cut yourself with a dull blade because it doesn't "bite" into the food as well as a sharp one.) Also key? A knife that's well-balanced and easy to maneuver, qualities Lisa said the Global knife has in spades.
What our reviewer says ??
Pros ??
In her review, Lisa called this knife "the Goldilocks of this category — it's not too heavy and not too light, and it slices through almost everything as if your food is as soft as Marshmallow Fluff." She also praised its design: As mentioned, it's made from a single piece of steel, which gives it a modern look she loved.
She appreciated how easily it handles too. "I didn't encounter the slightest bit of resistance when I diced onions, and the knife also cut through chicken breasts smoothly," she wrote. "While cutting through butternut squash was something of a challenge, this is a tough task for any knife, and this one was one of the best I tried to get this job done."
Cons ??
She didn't have any complaints per se, but if we're really splitting hairs (sorry, the knife puns are coming fast and furious today!), she pointed out that it's not dishwasher-safe. That said, you wouldn't want to put most chef's knives in the dishwasher: "Global recommends hand-washing and hand-drying their knives, which is fairly standard," she related. "I washed it with a regular sponge and warm, soapy water and dried it with a kitchen towel as opposed to letting it drip dry."
Autumn is family-feast season — time to upgrade your food-prep game.
