Advice and a haircut in the French Quarter

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A barber shop is more than just the place to let your hair down.

In New Orleans, it’s also the address for some sit-down advice.

WGNO Good Morning New Orleans features reporter Bill Wood takes a seat at the Hotel Monteleone Barber Shop.

The barber, who’s here to listen, is Pat O’Connell.

He’s set up shop in the barber shop which looks like part of the parking garage.

In fact, it was carved out of a couple of old parking spaces.

And it’s across the street from the hotel with the Carousel Bar.

The martini-powered merry-go-round that’s been serving booze and spinning customers at the same time since the forties.

O’Connell’s been going round and round the barber chair for the last 47 years.

That’s almost a half century of hair raising conversations about haircuts.

Hair has changed. But the way O’Connell gets paid has not.

As the sign says, “Cash or Check Only.”
