Maybe I'm a bit naive, but I was taken aback when I received a random notification in my phone's "Find My" app that my AirTag was about to die. What do you mean "die?" Don't AirTags last forever? Well, technically, yes, but only if you change their battery once you get that "running low" alert on your phone.
AirTags only notify you of a low battery when it’s nearly depleted, so you'll know it's time to swap it out when the "replace battery" alert appears. When you get this notification, simply press the button for instructions on how to change the battery and which type to use. Since I recently had to replace mine, I did the hard work for you and found a set of AirTag-approved replacement batteries that give you so much bang for your buck — 12 for just $6!
According to the "Find My" app, the AirTag only uses CR2032 batteries and one shopper said these are the only ones that work as a perfect replacement!
If you've ever changed a watch battery, a similar process applies here, but it's actually much simpler. All you have to do is push down on the back of the AirTag and twist counterclockwise. The battery will loosen, allowing you to lift it out of the slot. Then, you'll just pop one of the new ones into the same place, twist the cover clockwise, and it's locked and ready to be used.
Before changing the battery, the app alerted me that a CR2032 battery was specifically needed and this 12-pack comes with enough to last you years. Since one has a five-year shelf life — hold on, I'm doing the math, here — you shouldn't have to buy another pack of replacement batteries for another 60 years!
Not an Apple fan? They also work in Eufy and Tile Pro tags (Tile Mates use a different battery altogether). While I've been using these exclusively for my AirTags, they're also approved to work in small remote controllers, watches, scales, garage door openers, door chimes, pet collars, medical devices and more. The point is: Having 60 years' worth of battery life will hardly go to waste — I'm willing to bet you'll be glad you have these stashed away when your most essential tech pieces unexpectedly run out of juice.
Did I mention that these have over 6,000 five-star reviews on Amazon? That's a lot of praise for a coin cell battery. I did some serious research to make sure that these were approved to work in AirTags, but some shoppers had to get there the hard way.
"Tried a bunch of different 2032 batteries [and] none of them would work with the AirTags," one five-star reviewer wrote. "These work. Just change them out with your 'Find My' app opened on your phone and follow along the instructions. Works perfect."
The only setback to these batteries, which I and other Amazon shoppers agree on, is that they're a bit difficult to get out of the packaging: "They are sealed above and below with fused plastic, and the batteries are packed tightly in their compartments," one shopper explained. "There is no room around them to cut them easily out of the packaging."
The reason for that is child safety laws, so you're not likely to find another pack that's easier to cut into. I've found, though, that pressing my finger underneath the back of the battery and applying some pressure helps them pop out a bit more seamlessly.
You can't go wrong with this one-and-done grab. It may just be the best $6 you'll spend over the next six decades.
