Alzheimer's Association Cleveland Area Chapter plans three-part series
Sep. 9—The Alzheimer's Association Cleveland Area Chapter is hosting a three-part series where participants will learn how to recognize common signs of Alzheimer's and other dementia; gather information about memory loss issues; understand how to communicate effectively; and gain insight into identifying common behavioral triggers.
The series will take place on three consecutive Mondays at Ohman Family Living at Holly, 10190 Fairmount Road in Newbury Township. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. with the programs beginning at 6.
The Sept. 16 program is "Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia." Attendees will learn about the impact of Alzheimer's, the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia, stages and risk factors, and current research and treatments available for some symptoms, according to a news release.
Then, on Sept. 23, "10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's" will be held. Participants will learn how to recognize common signs of the disease; how to approach someone about memory concerns; the importance of early detection and benefits of a diagnosis; possible tests and assessments for the diagnostic process, and Alzheimer's Association resources, the release stated.
Finally, "Effective Communication Strategies" will take place on Sept. 30. Attendees will explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer's, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help families connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.
"These programs offer a wealth of information for anyone facing Alzheimer's or dementia," Mary Ertle, program director for the Alzheimer's Association Cleveland Area Chapter, stated in the release. "They can build a sense of community and allow our friends and neighbors to know they're not alone in this fight, while arming them with the tools and resources they need."
