Amazing makeup makeover: Get the Day of the Dead look in 7 steps
Do you love Day of the Dead makeup but can’t recreate the magic at home? Mexican hair and makeup artist Miriam Rodriguez, aka Miss Miriam, is here to show you how to transform yourself for Día de los Muertos in seven simple steps.
Rodriguez, 24, found her passion for makeup in high school. Día de los Muertos makeup holds a special place in her heart because it’s “a way of honoring our lost loved ones and celebrating our culture,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle. “I think it’s a way of really getting creative and thinking outside the box, especially with the vibrant colors.”
Miss Miriam reminds us there’s no right or wrong way to achieve the “Catrina” sugar skull look. Just have fun with it!
Step 1: Start with a white base and apply it all over your face. Rodriguez recommends using a white foundation versus face paint because paint “tends to crack.”
Step 2: Add red and orange eyeshadow to your eyes. “This is going to serve as an outline for our Catrina’s eyes,” she said.
Step 3: Take black eyeshadow and apply that to your eyelids and the bottom of your eyes. Blend the black, red, and orange eyeshadow, and add gold glitter to make your eyes pop.
Step 4: Use a black liquid eyeliner to draw a flower pattern around your eye, and then add gold gems.
Step 5: With that same black liquid liner, draw two triangles on both sides of your nose. Then add a hint of gold on the bridge of your nose.
Step 6: Add black eyeshadow to contour your face and cheeks. “This will give your face a more chiseled and hollow look,” Rodriguez said.
Step 7: Finally, add your favorite lipstick (preferably red) and use a black eyeliner to create the skull’s teeth. You’ll want to draw black lines around your mouth. If you really want to get creative, add a flower to your chin or dots on your forehead. Anything goes!
Rodriguez reminds everyone to have patience and practice: “You might not get it the first time. I’ve had to take off my makeup multiple times to get it the way I want it to look.”
