I'm a health and fitness writer and these are the deals I'm buying on Prime Day

While I tend to be someone who wants to workout outside whenever possible, in the overwhelming Texas summer heat, that's not always wise. I also live in a small, one-bedroom guest house (along with my husband and two toddlers), so to say space is at a premium would be an understatement. 

The Peloton bike is exactly the type of home fitness equipment that saves on space, can accommodate tough workouts and offers engaging classes and content to make indoor routines feel a little less tedious. Plus, it's on sale for just over $1,084 for Prime Day (that's 25% off). Aside from the invite-only discount that dipped the price down to $1,011 on day one of Prime Day, that's the brand's lowest-ever price for the original bike, so don't miss out if you've been waiting for a sign to get yours. 

Remember what I said about space being at a premium? While I tend to prefer individual dumbbells to adjustable sets, there's no way I can fit a full range of 5-50 pound dumbbells in my tiny house. Powerblock is basically the OG in the adjustable dumbbells space, and I've seen them hold their own against a slew of competitors for years, always maintaining high reviews. And for Prime Day, they're selling for $288 — their best deal of the year at 36% off. 

I started using Sun Bum sunscreen when I first started surfing, and it's the only brand I've bought for years. I had my first basal cell carcinoma at 27 years old (more related to years spent lifeguarding than to surfing), which has made me a stickler for a good sunscreen. Of course, Sun Bum isn't the cheapest sunscreen on the block, so I try to grab extra whenever there's a sale (it's certainly something I'll put to use, whether right now or in a couple months). This SPF 50 spray is 33% off for Prime Day, dropping it to $12.50 per canister, a much better price than at my local store, and by far the best Amazon price this year. 

They're also running deals on their kids' products, so you better believe I'm going to be grabbing a few bottles of the Sun Bum Kids SPF 50 lotion, too. At 43% off and about $10 a bottle? That's a screamin' good deal.

I've owned multiple iterations of the SHOKZ open-ear, bone-conduction headphones over the years, and I've always been a fan. Unfortunately, my last pair fell prey to the heavy hoof of a cow when I lived in Costa Rica (long story, it was a whole "thing"), and I haven't gotten around to replacing them. 

Now that I've returned to my running routine with my three- and one-year olds in tow, a set of headphones like this is particularly important. They offer many of the same features as other sport headphones — a sweat-resistant, hands-free, stay-put design — but their bone-conduction technology delivers music and sound to the eardrum from outside the ear, leaving the ear itself unobstructed. This means that as I run, I can clearly hear approaching cars and other ambient noises ... or more likely, my three year old yelling when his sister grabs his hair. 

They're typically a pricey pick at about $180, but for Prime Day they're a cool 31% off, putting them at a decidedly more palatable $125, which is their lowest price this year. 

I'm a sucker for a cold, bubbly drink, and I've been eyeing the Ninja Thirsti Drink System for a while. You see, I'm the kind of person who can drink regular old, unflavored carbonated water from hot cans — that's how much I like carbonation. I used to have a SodaStream, which I liked, but the Ninja's options for customization seem particularly useful. And since I'm trying to convince my husband that there's never a good reason to give the kids Coke, having an easy, at-home "soda maker" (all the flavor packages are sugar free and many include added vitamins) is likely to help sway him my direction. 

The system typically costs about $180, but right now it's on sale for $120 — by far its best price to date. 

I haven't jumped on the water flosser bandwagon yet, but oral health is incredibly important for overall health, and I want to make sure I'm setting the right example for my kids. Here at Yahoo, we're currently testing a number of oral healthcare products, and the writer who tested more than 10 different water flossers let me know that the Waterpik Aquarius Professional is her top choice overall. "The Waterpik has lots more nozzle options — including a toothbrush — and it's a family flosser," she said. And considering that this (normally $100) product is on sale for $50 for Prime Day? It seems like the right time to start a new, healthy habit. 

Stocking up on protein powder is like stocking up on sunscreen — it just makes sense to buy extra when your favorite brand is on sale. While I'm not a vegan, I do advocate for eating a plant-focused diet, which includes opting for plant-based protein powder to add to my post-workout shake. Orgain's Organic Protein is the perfect option with 21 grams of protein and 10 grams of prebiotic fiber that's good for the gut. 

It usually costs $30 for two pounds of powder, but for Prime Day, it's going for 30% off at $21 a tub. Granted, my tiny house doesn't have room for too many tubs, but I plan on grabbing a couple. 

Remember how I said I lived in Costa Rica for five years? Well, I married a Costa Rican. And since I married him four years ago, I've eaten more rice in total than I ever ate in my previous 37 years combined. In fact, our household lives and dies by our rice cooker. We always have rice in the house, and it's one of the two main ingredients (would you believe beans are the other?) in our daily breakfast — gallo pinto. Yes, we even eat rice and beans for breakfast. It's a great way to start the day with lots of vitamins, minerals and fiber. 

While our basic rice cooker certainly does the job, this version from KitchenAid looks like a worthwhile upgrade. I haven't mastered the art of getting the right rice-to-water ratio, and this machine is supposed to take care of that for you, thanks to its integrated scale and water tank. Plus, it also cooks other grains, has a dishwasher-safe basket and has a touchscreen interface that appears to keep the cooking process as simple as possible. Given that I only paid about $35 for my current rice cooker, the retail price of $300 for this one gives me pause, but the Prime Day deal drops it by a third (its lowest price to date), to a cool $190. Cheap? No. But if it'll make my day-to-day life easier, I'll take it. 

I'm a total fangirl for BrüMate drinkware. I have the brand's 40 ounce Era water bottle, which I call my "family water bottle" because my toddlers and husband love it just as much as I do. I have their 32-ounce Muv, which keeps my caffeine flowing (in the form of black coffee) all day long and I have their Uncork'd wine tumblers for when it's time for a nightly glass of red. 

What I don't have yet? Their MultiShaker bottle, which I imagine will go perfectly with my incoming tubs of protein powder. Usually priced at $35, BrüMate is offering a rare 20% discount for Prime Day, which brings it down to $28. 

Truth be told, I already have this killer double jogging stroller from BOB. With a three year old and a one year old, it's truly the only thing that has made it possible for me to get back into my running routine since moving back to the States. If you ask me, it's worth every penny of its typical retail cost (just shy of $800). But isn't it better if you don't have to pay the full price? For Prime Day, this bad boy is available for 20% off (not its best price ever, but one of the best of the year). 

I can also attest that when I lived in Costa Rica, the BOB Gear All-Terrain Pro Jogging Stroller (also 20% off for Prime Day) was a dream on the terrible roads and rough terrain around our house. If you want to keep up a running program with a toddler (or two) in tow, you really can't go wrong with BOB products. 

I had one of these migraine relief caps when I lived down in Costa Rica, and I couldn't begin to tell you where it disappeared to between Central America and Texas. What I can tell you is that the cap really works and there's no way I'm going to pass up on buying another at 56% off for Prime Day — its best price in over a year. 

I'll be honest — I have four different foam rollers in my house right now. As someone with chronic low back pain (which I've had since a car accident more than 20 years ago), foam rolling and yoga help keep me reasonably pain free most of the time. What I don't have? A basic, 36-inch long foam roller that's perfect for no-nonsense full-body rolling. At $17, it's hard to pass up this 11% discounted Prime Day deal for the Amazon Basics brand. 

Colorfulkoala yoga pants have made a name for themselves since I took my "leave of absence" from the United States. Since I've been back, I've been interested in trying them out. Of course, the brand is never terribly expensive with their pants typically priced around $35, but given my closet full of yoga pants, I never really need to make a purchase. Today's Prime Day price of $24 (the best price to date) may actually have me pulling the trigger on a pair. 

My workout wardrobe has seen better days. I'm the type of person who tends to wear clothes until they come apart at the seams. And even though I do a pretty good job of making sure I use the right kind of detergent with my athletic gear, even the best tanks and tights don't last forever. 

While my supply of yoga pants is mostly up-to-date, my tanks and tees are another story. So, it's time. And with this ICTIVE tank top selling for just $12 — its lowest price to date? I can reasonably pick up a few in multiple colors (I'm digging their neon green and neon orange — great for dusk or dawn runs to enhance visibility). 

I've actually been eyeing these running shorts from The Gym People for a while. I like that they're high waisted, have a built-in pocket and are loose through the thighs and hips. While the typical retail price of $27 isn't excessive, I love a deal under $20. In fact, I just might buy two. 

I'm a sucker for good running socks, but I hate how much each pair costs. The thing is, though, once you've been spoiled by the high-quality fit and feel of a truly great pair, you never want to go back. That said, I still refuse to pay the $20 (or more) per pair that high-quality brands usually charge. Instead? I wait until a day like Prime Day to find a deal that allows me to stock up. These $20 compression running socks from Balega are down to just over $11 a pair right now, which means I'm putting a bunch of them in my shopping cart. 

For a heat-lover like myself, spending Summer evenings in the backyard watching my kids run around is like a little slice of heaven. Except for one thing: the mosquitos. Those little devils have been ruining my hot summer nights and I'm ready to put an end to their reign of terror. While bug sprays work, I don't like the smell and my kids hate them, too. I've never tried these mosquito repellent bracelets before, but I feel like with the discounted Prime Day price, it's worth giving them a try. With any luck, I'll be itch free soon while also lowering my risk (and my family's risk) of getting a mosquito-born illness.
