Anna Faris quickly deletes pants-free photo after being body-shamed on Instagram
A cheeky attempt at humor backfired on Anna Faris on Tuesday when she posted a photo of herself to Instagram and was body-shamed so harshly about her weight that she deleted the shot about 15 minutes later.
In the photo — captured by her Unqualified podcast assistant, Michael Sherman, and presumably taken right before Faris went on the air — the host and comedian is hunched over a garbage can wearing a long-sleeved top, knee-high boots, what appear to be Spanx … and nothing else.
“Having pre-show jitters,” Faris joked in the caption.
But the photo elicited shocked reactions from some followers. Among the now-deleted comments, according to ET Canada, were “This is alarming,” “You look so unhealthy — eat,” and “I feel this pic is a cry for help, I hope you get the help you need.” Faris soon took the photo down without addressing the outcry.
Faris’s fans quickly mobilized, though, and started leaving words of support in the comments of her other recent Instagram photos. One person turned the tables on the cyberbullies, saying, “Shame on those people that were commenting before. You are beautiful and judgment being hidden behind condescending concern’ is rude and inappropriate.”
Another person wrote, “You are beautiful and don’t worry about nasty jealous people. I’ve struggled with my weight all my life, constantly being told to eat something. I’ve even had food thrown at me!”
Others related their feelings of inadequacy and thanked the star for making them laugh and cry with her work. “Sometimes people need to escape reality and they are able to do that by watching their favorite actors. LIKE YOU!” one fan gushed.
In April, Faris did a cover interview with Women’s Health in which she discussed her eating habits and weight fluctuations.
“When I was pregnant, I gained 70 pounds!” she told the magazine. “I’d never enjoyed food more and I didn’t care. My vanity was completely tidal-waved by the need to just nourish this thing. … I had absolutely zero concern about my weight. It felt really good.”
She added that, as a busy working mom with a 6-year-old son, she’s simply running around a lot and doesn’t have much time to indulge.
“I’ve never worked on a show where I lost weight, except for Mom,” she said of her CBS sitcom. “I run up and down stairs 30 or 40 times a day from the set to my dressing room, I’m doing this podcast, I’ve got a [kid]. I feel so busy; I don’t have a ton of time to indulge in foods I love, like a cheeseburger and fries, with mayonnaise, my favorite condiment. Food’s more of an efficiency thing.”
