There was never going to be a full ’90s comeback unless this one particular fashion brand had its own renaissance. Gen X and older Millennials know full well what store was the perennial favorite of that era, and it’s returning with a visionary designer, who has red-carpet appeal.

The Gap, which was on every street corner and mall across America 30 years ago, fell out of favor once the early aughts rolled in. The brand was known for its core basics for any closet: jeans, t-shirts, sun dresses, and even your everyday unisex fragrance (remember Grass, Earth, Day and Heaven?). Now, fashion designer Zac Posen is the new creative director for Gap Inc. and he’s spreading the word by having Oscar-winning stars like Anne Hathaway and Da’Vine Joy Randolph wear his work on some of the biggest red carpets in town.
Randolph had a fashion moment when she arrived on Posen’s arm at the Met Gala in early May. The custom-made gown made from a variety of denim shades had a stunning ball skirt that created a pool of fabric as she posed. It was the perfect showcase for Gap’s return — they are known for their denim, and Randolph is one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood right now. “I knew for sure the fit was going to be insane,” Randolph told The New York Times. “I knew that this dress was going to look like it was poured on my body, which is very exciting for me as a curvy girl who likes to show her body.” For Posen, the use of the brand’s signature fabric created a “canvas for creativity” on fashion’s biggest night.
Hathaway also made a splash last week in a gorgeous Gap white shirtdress at the Bulgari Aeterna High Jewelry Event in Rome. A crisp white button-down shirt was turned on its head and made into high fashion. “Designing this custom white shirt dress was an exciting opportunity to reimagine Gap’s classic white shirt,” Posen told The Hollywood Reporter. “By incorporating elements like the shirt’s collar and placket, and adding feminine touches with darting at the waist, we created a modern look that pays homage to the elegance of Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday.” If that wasn’t enough, the limited-edition Poplin Shirtdress is officially available for pre-order beginning Tuesday, May 28 at Gap.com only. It is priced at $158 and will be sold in sizes 00 to 16.
So, the Gap’s comeback has begun, and the ’90s are officially back. Get ready to bolster that summer wardrobe with key classic items that will have a Posen twist.
