Another Massive Pet Food Recall Has Been Issued Nationwide—Here's What You Need to Know

Another day, another pet food recall that we need to be aware of. And just like the previous ones that have been announced recently, it's definitely one that you should take very seriously.
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), TFP Nutrition has expanded its October recall to include an additional 37 products due to possible Salmonella contamination. In a November 16 notice, the FDA revealed that dog, cat and catfish dry food formulas manufactured in the company's Nacogdoches, Texas facility are all included in the expanded voluntary recall.

For those that are just catching up, the previous voluntary recall included 50-pound bags of the popular Retriever All Life Stages Mini Chunk Recipe Dry Dog Food and while the number of bags affected wasn't indicated, they were all manufactured on October 4, 2023 and October 5, 2023. This current recall, however, includes Star Pro Premium Dog Food, Farm Dog, Lone Star, Hill Country Fare, Exclusive, H-E-B Texas Pets, and Member's Mark dry dog foods. For dry cat foods, Country Acres, Economax, Exclusive, Feline Medley, H-E-B Texas Pets, Multi-Cat, Paws & Claws, Meow For More and Star Pro are all included, while Lone Star is the sole catfish dry food included in the recall.
As the list is quite lengthy and expands through multiple brands and varieties, best by dates, bag sizes and locations distributed to will vary, so it's best to check the full list of recalled items here.

For context, pet foods that are contaminated with salmonella are important to pay attention to because they affect the health of both animals and humans. According the FDA, pets — even if they don't seem to be ill — can carry the bacteria in question and pass it to their human companions. And as the CDC notes, symptoms of salmonella in humans can include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. In serve cases, however, hospitalization or death can occur.
Pets, similarly to humans, do not always display symptoms from the infection. Symptoms to look out for include vomiting, fever, lost of appetite, decreased activity level or either diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. If your pet has any of the above symptoms, be sure to contact your vet immediately.
While TFP Nutrition is working directly with retailers nationwide to remove the product in question from the supply chain, if you happen to have any of the affected product in your possession, it is urged that you cease feeding it to your pets and dispose of it immediately.
