A 'Sandlot' Prequel Is in the Works Because Legends Never Die
"Remember kid, there's heroes and there's legends: Heroes get remembered, but legends never die." Those are the words that the spirit of the Great Bambino, the Sultan of Swat, Colossus of Clout, Babe Ruth, said to Benny in The Sandlot. And now, 25 years after the movie's release, some of our own legends are returning, as Twentieth Century Fox is in the early stages of developing a Sandlot prequel, Deadline is reporting. It marks the return of the original's co-writer and director David Mickey Evans.
While details about the plot are being kept under wraps, Deadline has heard rumors that early versions of the script might be about the legend of the beast. Even though we're unlikely to get origin stories of Smalls, Benny, and the crew, there are a number of stories worth following from the original. The best would be a movie about James Earl Jones' Mr. Mertle, who we learn in the original Sandlot was a baseball player who knew Babe Ruth before he was hit by a baseball and went blind. Now, if early versions of the script tie in the origins of Hercules-Mr. Mertle's English Mastiff that the kids called The Beast-sounds like we've got a heck of a story.
Why stop there? Let's just build out the full Sandlot Cinematic Universe. How about a movie where Wendy Peffercorn grows up to be an Olympic swimmer? Or maybe some sort of Moneyball-type movie where Smalls becomes a scout using sabermetrics. Whatever it takes to keep this series going, we'll take it. For-ev-er.
