'This Is Us' Fans, Randall and Beth Might Get Divorced
It's already tragic enough that Jack and Rebecca didn't get their happy ever after on This Is Us. But to add to that heartbreak, the season three fall finale has made it seem like #CouplesGoals duo Randall and Beth might not either. It's left us all sobbing to ourselves and wondering: Are Randall and Beth really not going to last?!
Where Beth and Randall are right now ...
Even though the two have shared some touching moments together in season three (like when Randall lovingly asked Beth to be on his political campaign), episode nine ended on a rather sour note:
Beth told Randall that she needed him to pull out of the political campaign (Randall had promised her that he'd quit at any time if she needed him to). He declared he wouldn't do it.
A disappointed Beth is seen putting blankets on the couch downstairs. Randall tries to talk to her, but she blows past him.
An ominous flash-forward scene (that makes it seem like Beth and Randall are not in contact) shows grown-up Tess calling Beth and telling her that it's time to go see Rebecca.
Panic across living rooms everywhere ensues.
What Dan Fogelman says is coming up for them ...
In a new Deadline interview with show creator Dan Fogelman, the writer was asked if the fall finale was intentionally trying to hint that Randall and Beth are separated in the future. Inhale, exhale, and then read what Dan said in reply:
"Obviously the timing of them having as heavy a moment as these two characters have had on screen in their marriage, butted up up against that, when they’re not in the same place, leaves you with some new questions. I will say that Randall and Beth, and Sterling and Susan, have some heavy-duty stuff coming up in the back half of this season, which I’ve already read, written and seen. It’s real tour de force stuff for the both of them, both as a couple and as individuals."
Even though all of this sounds pretty bleak, Dan did say he realizes just how much viewers have "taken to" the couple - which we hope means he won't destroy our hearts completely.
It's all one giant shrug for now, but at least fans can go into the second half of season three (which starts on January 15) emotionally prepared to deal with Randall and Beth's impending struggles. Sigh.
