This Season, the Versace Woman Wears Her Strength on Her Sleeve
“The Versace woman is just 100% hot,” said Adwoah Aboah before Friday’s show in Milan. For Fall 2017, the Versace woman is also monogrammed, stilettoed, and sporting Manic Panic hair extensions in neon streaks of orange, blue, red, and canary yellow. The effect was haute couture jabs Hot Topic, and it was actually superfun.
But while the cutout shoulders and scuba-suit dresses were sharp and sexy, it’s the words that screamed loudest on the catwalk. Models like Anja Rubik, Binx Walton, and Bella Hadid sported eight mantras (UNITY, EQUALITY, LOYALTY, COURAGE, LOVE, UNIFIED, STRENGTH, POWER) on sweaters, skirt hems, tailored shirts, and oversize knit beanies. Expect them to be street-style bait in the near future — especially Look 28’s LOVE hat, a riff on Alexander Wang’s sold-out GIRLS beanie from last year.
Other major moments include Behati Prinsloo hitting the catwalk for the first time since giving birth, ’90s supermodel Amber Valetta closing the show in a thigh-high slit, and so many gold chokers. (We counted 20.)
And if you’ve noticed some heavy black liner on many models this season, including today at Versace, there’s a hidden reason: Makeup legend Pat McGrath is teasing something new from her sold-out series of runway-tested cosmetics. Stock up on extra makeup remover now — it looks as if this is going to be a high-impact product for deep, smoldering liner that’s meant to finally nix the cat-eye trend for good.
