Self-help expert, wellness guru, motivational coach, Oprah BFF—whatever you call her, there’s no question that Gabrielle Bernstein is a phenomenon. Actress Blair Brown delivers a moving performance of City of Girls, the latest novel by Elizabeth Gilbert. This unique love story is told from the point of a 95-year-old woman looking back on her life with thoughtfulness, pride, and few regrets. Set in the glamorous New York City theater world of WWII era New York, the book is full of larger-than-life characters and stunning clothing (the main character is a costume seamstress). Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb

Lori Gottlieb is a Los Angeles-based therapist whose tales of her own patients—a narcissistic TV producer, a newlywed diagnosed with a terminal illness, a depressed senior citizen filled with regret about her life, and a millennial who keeps wasting her time on the wrong guys—are enough to keep you listening. Yet the twist in this thoroughly contemporary account comes when Gottlieb experiences a heart-wrenching and totally unexpected breakup—and finds herself on the couch. This candid story of the therapist-as-patient is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. Don’t just take our word for it: Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is now in development as a television series with Eva Longoria and ABC.

Gary Janetti may be the funniest guy you’ve never heard of. Unless, of course, you follow his popular Instagram account, where he posts what-they’re-really-thinking-style headlines alongside tabloid photos of the British Royal family. The former Executive Producer of Will & Grace has just released his first memoir, a wickedly funny and poignant collection of essays recalling stories from throughout his childhood and young adult life. If you love storytelling in the style of David Sedaris, this audiobook—narrated by Janetti himself—is for you.

Me by Elton John

Sir Elton John’s first—and, says the singer, only—autobiography is even more fun to listen to than it is to read. That’s because it’s narrated by actor Taron Edgerton, who starred as John in Rocketman, the film that is also an account of the musical legend’s extraordinary life. (John himself also appears in the audiobook.) Like Rocketman, released this past summer, Me is a deeply personal account of the singer-songwriter’s life and rise to fame. Yet the book/audiobook version goes into greater detail than the film version about John’s road to sobriety and his marriage to husband David Furnish. “Your Song” or “Bennie and the Jets”? “Tiny Dancer” or “Candle in the Wind?” Elton John’s best song may be open to debate, but the answer is a definitive ‘yes’ when it comes to the question of whether this book is worth a listen.

Heads Will Roll had us at Kate McKinnon. The Saturday Night Live star co-created and co-stars in this hilariously macabre 10-episode audio comedy with her sister. McKinnon, as Queen Mortuana of the Night Realm, with her not-all-there raven minion Jojo (Lynne) by her side, rules with an iron fist, even as she mistakes the bagel delivery guy for an insubordinate peasant and oversees his beheading. But the fun doesn’t stop there: McKinnon and Lynne share the mic with a star-studded list of pals, including Meryl Streep, Tim Gunn, Peter Dinklage, Queer Eye’s Fab Five, Aidy Bryant, and many more. You can tell how much fun these actors had off-screen—and you’ll have an equally good—and ghastly—time listening to this Audible Original.

From St. Elmo’s Fire to Ghost to Indecent Proposal to G.I. Jane, her film roles epitomized the 80s and 90s, while her tumultuous marriages and other personal scandals provided endless fodder for tabloids well into recent years. In her new memoir, Demi Moore, now 56, shares intimate details of the most public parts of her history, while also opening up candidly about subjects she had always fought to keep private—like a troubled childhood, addiction, and her own paralyzing self-doubt. Audiences have always been drawn to Moore’s husky voice, and now they can hear the actress put it to use to tell her own personal narrative in this unabridged audiobook.

Ever since Reese Witherspoon selected Where the Crawdads Sing for her September 2018 book club, this debut novel by author Delia Owens has remained resolutely on the Amazon bestseller list—now at 55 weeks and counting. This coming-of-age story meets murder mystery is, above all, a lyrical ode to the natural beauty of the marshlands of the American South. Narrator Cassandra Campbell performs the Audible book with beauty and precision; she stays true to region’s accents and dialects in the same way Owens accurately and poetically describes the flora and fauna of the North Carolina marsh.
