A fast-food franchise that promises "The Filet Mignon of Chicken" is expected to open in the Augusta area later this year.

Huey Magoo's Chicken Tenders will be just one of several new businesses opening near the new Kroger Marketplace at Eisenhower Crossing, at the corner of Harper Franklin Avenue and Jimmie Dyess Parkway. The Kroger opened in May near the new Belair Elementary School.

Varying by locations, Huey Magoo’s fast-casual restaurants offer dine-in, takeout, catering, third-party delivery services, drive-thru and curbside pickup.

Its signature chicken tenders come grilled, hand-breaded or “sauced.” The restaurant's seven sauces include the original Magoo Sauce, whose taste has been compared to Thousand Island dressing with a dash of hot sauce. Other sauces include Tangy BBQ, Oriental Sweet Heat and Zesty Garlic Parmesan.

Locations also feature fresh-made salads, sandwiches and wraps. Huey Magoo’s promises that each tender is always made all-natural with no preservatives.

Huey Magoo’s began in the Orlando, Florida, area in 2004 with founders Matt Armstrong and Thad Hudgens. Andy Howard, Wingstop’s former executive vice president, became Huey Magoo’s CEO in 2016.

Howard announced in May that "next location is slated to open in Augusta later this year."

Plans for the Augusta location, held by KANCECO Construction of Atlantic Beach, Florida, call for a 2,751-square-foot restaurant at 3942 Harper Franklin Ave. with a 300-square-foot patio.

In time for the new college football season, Huey Magoo's opened a location in Athens at the University of Georgia's Sanford Stadium at Gate 9 under the Sanford Drive bridge.

In May, the Huey Magoo's in Statesboro, 141 Tormenta Way, became the second of between eight and 10 new restaurants planned for Georgia and Tennessee. Milledgeville's location opened in 2021.
