B&B Discount offers fresh produce while reviving a dream
BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — When Fred Brooks’ father was living, the two of them often took trips to southern U.S. states in search of perfect fruits and vegetables.
The duo would bring the fresh produce back to southern West Virginia and sell it at local farmers’ markets.
It was something the two men enjoyed according to Fred Brooks who recalled the events on Monday, July 8, 2024 to 59News. Brooks said his father had often said he would like to open a store.
Brooks said his father recently died without realizing that dream. That was when Brooks’ son convinced Brooks to open B&B Discount on Second Street in Beckley.
“Right now, we [have] fresh tomatoes. We [have] fresh corn, half runners that the locals seem to really enjoy,” Brooks said. “[We have] nice, fresh watermelon going on. We just recently got a watermelon truck in.”

The fresh market offers fruit and vegetables, along with small-batch jams and honey, Mister Bee’s snacks, old-fashioned candies, soft drinks, and novelties.
“The jams we got from down South. They’re from Virginia,” said Brooks. “That’s another thing the customers wanted, so we just bring it in, different varieties, every day, to every week when we down South.”

Although Brooks’ dad has passed away, his passion lives on at B&B Discount, said Brooks.
“When we go down to get it, we check everything before we end up loading the trucks,” said Brooks. “So, that way, it meets my quality, and that way I know what the customer is really looking for.”
Customers inside the store on Monday morning said they appreciate skipping transit and cab fares and walking to a local produce market.
