Bad Bunny Explains How He Landed on the Stage Name

The mystery has been solved–here's how Benito got his nickname.

Bad Bunny recently revealed how he decided on his stage name, and long story short, he was "feeling bonito" and then just committed to the bit.

During a recent appearance on The Late Late Show, the Puerto Rican musician, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, told host James Corden how he came up with the alter ego.

The "Después de la Playa" singer confessed that he wanted to conceal his identity by wearing a mask before becoming famous.

“Like DJ Marshmello,” Cordon said on Tuesday's "Carpool Karaoke" segment, referencing the American electronic music producer known for hiding his face by wearing a white square helmet with a black smiley face. Marshmello is behind the hit songs “Wolves” with Selena Gomez and "Leave Before You Love Me" with Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas of the Jonas Brothers.

“Yeah, something like that 'cause I never wanted to be so famous, but then I just went with the flow,” Bad Bunny said.

The talk show host then pressed further, asking why he would want to cover “such a beautiful face” and how he got to the now-famous pen name.

The 29-year-old Reggaeton star continued, explaining that he went with the stage name "Bad Bunny" because no matter how "bad" he acts, he knows he's got the face of a cutie.

"That’s me! Because I’m a good guy. I’m cute," Bad Bunny admitted, and it's rare for us entertainment editors to say this, but we have absolutely no notes.

The Un Verano Sin Ti singer previously alluded that the moniker was a callback to his childhood, telling E! News a bunny costume he was forced to wear as a child was part of its inspiration. "Bad Bunny, that name comes from a picture when I was a kid. I think that I was six years old," he told the outlet at the 2020 Billboard Awards. "I was so mad. That was Easter day in the school, and the teacher picked me to dress up."
