How Are Beginner And Expert Skis Different? A Ski Shop Employee Explains
Ski design is a complicated bit of alchemy that we snowsports fans tend to take for granted and, in some cases, completely misunderstand.
It's true! You're not alone if you've spent years and years skiing but can't pinpoint the difference between sidecut and rocker. (Author's note: I spent the first 15 years of my skiing career thinking sidecut meant sidewalls. Embarrassing stuff.)
Luckily, the good folks at Kunstadt Sports are here to explain a foundational block of ski design: the differences between beginner, intermediate, and expert skis.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't learn a thing or two here -- like I said, I've spent more time than I would care to admit as a member of the blissfully unaware crew.
As excellent as this explainer is, though, remember that it leaves a lot on the table. Concepts like sidecut, rocker, camber, and tail design remain completely untouched.
This, of course, is no big deal. Many skiers, heck, most skiers don't need to engage with the nitty gritty when it comes to selecting a ski. If you head to a shop with experienced employees, you'll probably land on a pair of skis that'll do you right.
That's the thing.
It's actually quite difficult to purchase a bad ski these days -- most brands know what they're doing. The primary concerns, as succinctly covered in this video from Kunstadt Sports, are stiffness and length.
Mucking up in this arena is where you can get yourself into unpleasant territory. Seriously. A pair of sticks that are too long and too stiff can really suck the joy out of skiing. That's my piece of advice for the day.
In summation, do your research but don't drive yourself mad over the details -- there are plenty of knowledgable folks out there to help you make the right call when it comes to selecting a ski.
