Go Behind the Scenes of Persuasion with Mia McKenna-Bruce
A role in the recent Netflix adaptation of Persuasion wasn’t something that Mia McKenna-Bruce, who plays Mary Musgrove, was able to leave behind when the cameras turned off.
“It could be crazy, because we’d be wearing corsets and other period pieces,” the actress explains. “It was like being in a film—obviously we were shooting a film, but it also felt like living in one because you’d look around at one another like what are we doing?”
The act of playing characters living in the Regency era wasn’t always so easy to leave at work for McKenna-Bruce or her costars, a group that included Dakota Johnson and Henry Golding. “You have to change your mannerisms to suit the period,” McKenna-Bruce says. “We all learned how to hold glasses and cutlery and do all the little things you might not think about. Then, when you’re going about your day everything you do is completely different; you don’t just step off set and leave it behind, you’re still living with bits and pieces of your character.”
Here, she opens her personal camera roll, to share photos from set.
"This is me, Nia Towle, and Izuka Hoyle—who plays my sisters-in-law—and because of Covid, we weren’t allowed to hang out in each other’s trailers, so we’d all sit on the steps together, which wasn’t breaking the rules."
"In the film, I have this massive bun with plaits around it on the back on my head. In real life, I have relatively short hair, so every morning it was a process of putting my hair into curlers and having to put on four hairpieces. At the end of the day, it felt better to take off my hairpiece than my corset."
“Here I am again sitting on the steps of my trailer. Ben Bailey Smith, who played Charles, was opposite me so when we sat on the steps we had to wear face shields because we were too close. The temperature was really hot, so your makeup would get sweaty inside the shields, but they meant we could work so it was worth it."
“When we were taking these photos, I didn’t even realize the modern stuff you’d see alongside our costumes, but it’s actually very funny. Sometimes we’d get a coffee truck on set, so at this point we were probably on our third coffee and feeling quite hyper. That was a very large latte I was drinking.”
“We were spending a lot of time in hair in the morning, because we all had these fancy hairstyles. So, whenever there was the slightest bit of rain it was like cover up. In this photo, we’re inside but even so we had rain bonnets on just in case. They were like granny hats, so it felt like an important moment to document."
"This is my favorite costume! On the top is a white, lacy dress and beneath is a blue dress. Wearing a corset and two dresses was a lot, but all of the costumes were absolutely stunning. This one made me feel like I was living out my princess dreams."
