When I became a parent, I envisioned my future as one gauzy, soft-focus Instagram post. But imagination gave way to reality, and that reality comes complete with bedtime whining, chapped lips, smushed strawberry slices and, wait for it...even lice. To deal with the ups, downs and icks of motherhood, you need the right tools. And often, you need them without the effort of getting in the car and making a trip to the store.

It’s hard to believe that my son used to find this little stacking ring the challenge of a lifetime. He was entranced.

This could be one of the most perfect toys ever made: It makes kids do the work, as they hone their fine motor skills and tackle problem solving by figuring out which rings go where and how. And they do it over and over and over again.

Why does a young child want to cuddle up with an 18-inch stuffed panda instead of a plush down pillow? Need you ask? There is no answer. At least not one that makes sense. But I do know that when his pillow pet is on the bed, bedtime goes smoother. And it’s machine washable, for obvious reasons.
