Betty White Has Been on TV Since Before the Very First Emmys 70 Years Ago—and She’s Clearly Still Got It
It feels like Betty White, first lady of TV, has been around for all of time. Or at the very least since the beginning of television. And in some ways she has. The Emmys may be celebrating its 70thanniversary, but White has been working in the field since before the first award show even aired. Yeah.
The 96-year-old actress and inspiration to us all made an appearance at the 2018 Emmys to remind us all why it is that we love TV. And also to poke fun at Lorne Michaels, creator and producer of Saturday Night Live.
“I thought the biggest, most exciting night I’d ever had—I’m talking to Lorne Michaels now—was the night he gave me an honor, but boy you topped yourself tonight, Lorne,” White told the crowd. She later added, “Thank you, Lorne Michaels, for doing not only this tonight but all the wonderful things he’s done with me. No, for me.” She may be 96 but the gal’s still got it.
Hollywood’s beloved collective grandma made her first Emmys appearance in 1951 and has been nominated a whopping 22 times, winning five of those awards. From The Mary Tyler Moore Show to The Golden Girls to Hot in Cleveland, White is a television legend. She received a well-deserved standing ovation.
We probably don’t have another 70 years of Betty White to come, but we’ll be damned if we don’t relish every sassy second we do get of her on film.
