Britney Spears just set the record straight after reports claimed that she was working on a new album. On Wednesday, Jan. 3, the 42-year-old singer revealed to her Instagram followers that she will “never return to the music industry.”
The princess of pop has hit some major milestones over the past few years. In addition to releasing her memoir, The Woman In Me in October 2023, she released her first new music since 2016 in 2022, and even had a Broadway show inspired by her discography. While each of these projects have been successful, she made it crystal clear that she has no plans to add recording a new album to her list of accomplishments.
“I will never return to the music industry!!! When I write, I write for fun or I write for other people!!! For those of you who have read my book, there’s loads that you don’t know about me …,” Britney wrote on Instagram. “I’ve written over 20 songs for other people the past two years!!! I’m a ghostwriter and I honestly enjoy it that way!!!”
As Brit shares in her memoir, the pop star's path to success has not been smooth sailing, which may explain why she has no desire to return to the music industry. In 2021, she was finally freed from a 13-year conservatorship, and recently underwent a divorce from her ex-husband Sam Asghari. These challenges have not only affected Britney's professional and personal life. Some experts speculate that they've affected her net worth, too.
The good news: Britney isn't pressed for cash. With so many chart-toppers and brand deals over the years comes an "Outrageous" net worth.
She took her own "Work B*tch" lyrics to heart and earned more than $30 million a year in eight of the last 20 years, Forbes reported in 2020.
Here's exactly how Britney made all her money over the years and what her total net worth is in 2024.
Britney Spears has earned millions from her albums.
Her debut album, ...Baby One More Time, sold a whopping 10.6 million copies in the U.S., per Billboard. It was far from the last, and Britney did it again, just as she predicted.
In fact, her first two albums were so successful she earned almost $10 million in advance for her third, In the Zone. Her other albums, Britney, Blackout, Circus, Femme Fatale, Britney Jean, and Glory, only racked up more sales.
Britney is the fourth best-selling artist in the U.S., per Nielsen tracking. She has sold nearly 150 million records worldwide, according to Billboard.
Britney secured a "record-breaking" book deal for her memoir.
Yeah, Brit can do it all. In July, the superstar announced she was releasing a memoir, titled The Woman In Me, in October 2023. The book deal agreement was "record-breaking," Variety reported. She received a $12.5 million advance and earns 25 percent of the net profits from her book sales, according to TMZ.
The Woman In Me sold 1.1 million copies in its first week.
Britney Spears'highly-anticipated tell-all memoir, The Woman In Me, was released on October 24, 2023 and sold an impressive 1.1 million copies in the United States in its first week, according to The New York Times.
“I poured my heart and soul into my memoir, and I am grateful to my fans and readers around the world for their unwavering support,” Britney said in a news release from the book's publisher, Gallery Books, which announced the sales numbers.
The Woman in Me remained the top-selling book in the U.S. during its second week of publication, selling an additional 132,000 copies, AP News reported.
The tell-all became Amazon’s most sold non-fiction book for up to three weeks after its release and it quickly made its way to the top of Amazon’s Best Sellers list, per Investopedia.
Oh, and she also raked in revenue from Broadway, too.
ICYDK, a jukebox musical full of Britney's songs recently made its Broadway debut. The musical, Once Upon A One More Time, was apparently an idea of the singer's own invention, according to Variety. The musical used Britney's catalogue to tell a fantastical, modernized story of well-known princesses, including Cinderella and Snow White.
The show's final performance was on September 3, 2023, and it's not known exactly how much Brit raked in from total ticket sales. The contract stipulations were negotiated post-conservatorship, per Variety, so it's likely this was one of Britney's biggest money-earning projects in several years.
Britney has made tons from her tours over the years.
She has headlined 10 concert tours throughout her career. Brit's most recent, 2018's Piece of Me Tour, grossed an estimated $54.6 million.
Overall, Britney has earned around $458 million from touring alone, according to Forbes.
Britney earned around $400,000 a night during her Vegas residency.
In 2013, Britney began a four-year residency, where she reportedly earned around $400,000 per night, according to The Daily Mail. When she left, she had raked in more than $140 million in revenue. Her final performance alone brought in $1.1 million, which is a record for a single theater Las Vegas residency show.
Britney was set to start a new Las Vegas residency, "Domination," at a $507,000-a-concert rate. However, she put it on hold due to her father's health issues, and it has yet to happen.
Britney Spears merch is another millions-maker for the star.
Britney's Army is doing more than buying music and concert tickets. Her website sells everything from shirts with Britney's image to wine glasses engraved with "sip me baby one more time." (File under: NEED.)
Britney also has a billion-dollar collection of perfumes. She launched Curious, her first perfume, for $39.95 in 2004. Elizabeth Arden paid Britney $52 million for it, per Hollywood Reporter, and it was a hit. By 2013, over 500 million bottles of Curious had sold.
Many more soon followed. In 2020, Britney's brother stated that the perfume had grossed over $100 billion, according to Newsweek.
Britney has dabbled in acting in movies and TV show appearances.
Britney starred in Crossroads, which grossed $61 million, in 2002. In her memoir, Britney revealed that the film's lack of critical success made her "retire" from acting. "That was pretty much the beginning and end of my acting career, and I was relieved," she wrote, per Entertainment Weekly. She's also made special guest appearances in Glee, Will & Grace, How I Met Your Mother, and more.
She also had a brief reality TV show with her ex-husband Kevin Federline, Britney and Kevin: Chaotic. However, it only ran for a few episodes in 2005.
In 2012, Britney's second stint on reality TV was much more successful—and profitable. She was a judge on The X Factor and got a check for a reported $15 million for one season spent doling out critiques, per Insider.
Britney also revealed in The Woman In Me that she was up for the leading role in The Notebook, but the role (obviously) ended up going to Rachel McAdams, per Entertainment Weekly.
Britney's past endorsement deals were also in the millions.
The popstar has repped Skechers, McDonald's, Pepsi, and more with TV and print ads to the tune of $12 million. However, she has not appeared in a commercial since 2015, according to Forbes.
Britney Spears safeguarded her fortune with a prenup.
Brit signed an “ironclad” prenup, according to TMZ, which allows her to keep her entire fortune if things went south with Sam Asghari. Now, after seven years together and 14 months of marriage, the couple is divorcing, according to the Associated Press. A source close to Asghari stated that the filing occurred on August 9, 2023.
Apparently, Sam is "attempting to negotiate concessions beyond his prenup," according to Page Six, and has allegedly threatened to release "extraordinarily embarrassing information" about Britney if his negotiations are not met.
Attorney Mathew Rosengart, who assisted in freeing Britney from her 13-year conservatorship, was apparently involved in spelling out the terms of the couple's prenuptial agreement, per Page Six. The specifications of the agreement outline that Britney will keep all of the money she earned prior to the couple's marriage (which, is quite a bit of it).
Sam was allotted around $1 million for every two years of marriage, per US Weekly. Since they have only been married for a little over a year, it doesn't look like Sam will qualify for that sum of cash. Moreover, Sam has no claims over the "Circus"singer's music catalog, and is not listed on the deed of their home. The couple put their home into a limited liability company, or an LLC.
Britney pays about $40,000 a month to Kevin Federline.
As of 2020, about 25 percent of her gross income was going to her team (think: agents, managers, and lawyers) and at least 40 percent goes toward taxes. Britney was also paying ex-husband Kevin Federline about $500,000 in child support annually to provide for the couple's children, Jayden and Sean, per Forbes.
In September, TMZ reported that Federline was vying for even more from Britney in monthly payments.
Her legal team says her dad got some of her earnings.
In January 2022, Britney's legal team claimed Jamie Spears “enriched himself” by “taking more than $6 million from his daughter’s earnings," per CNBC.
They also said Jamie “petitioned for fees to be paid to dozens of different law firms” to the tune of “more than $30 million.”
Jamie had been asking the court to force Brit to continue paying his legal fees after the conservatorship ended, however, a judge denied the request in January 2022, Insider reported.
Britney's current home is worth around $7.5 million.
Britney and Sam signed paperwork for a new house together right after getting hitched. They dropped a cool $11.8 million on the pad, per TMZ. However, Britney sold the home less than a year later, for just under $10 million, People reported.
She still owns a home in Thousand Oaks, which she purchased for $7.5 million in 2015, per The Daily Mail. The couple lived there together until their divorce earlier this year, but Sam reportedly moved out after filing. He is not listed on the deed, per Page Six.
Britney's single with Elton John was a chart topper.
ICYMI, Brit dropped a single with Elton John, called "Hold Me Closer," in August 2022 after six years of silence. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the collab between these two iconic popstars was a huge commercial success. The song debuted at No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, marking Britney's 14th top-10 single. The accolade also meant Brit scored a top-ten single across four different decades.
And the hit song's made a lot of dough, too. As of May 2023, the single had roughly 111,000 downloads and 124.6 million streams in the United States, per Billboard. Britney also released another song with will. i. am. called "Mind Your Business"in July 2023.
What is Britney Spears' net worth in 2024?
Thanks to her totally massive career, Britney's various ventures, music deals, and appearances add up to a net worth of $70 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, however Forbes reports that it is a bit lower, at just $60 million.
It's also worth noting that Britney's net worth is drastically lower than some of her other pop star peers. Forbes estimates that this is likely due to her father being in control of her finances for so long.
