Bullies rip up invitation to 11-year-old's birthday party in front of her
Nancy Eddins was excited to invite her classmates to her birthday party — until some classroom bullies decided to rip up the invitations in front of her, according to her mother Stephanie Eddins.
Stephanie told WAVE that Nancy, from Louisville, Ky., has experienced bullying before, but never to such a degree. She felt absolutely crushed and didn’t think anyone would be there to help her celebrate turning 11.
Hopeful that the community and her friends could help make a memorable experience for her daughter, Stephanie reached out to Metro Alcoholic Beverage Licenses (ABC), Lousiville Metro Police Department and Pleasure Ridge Fire Department in Kentucky.
Under the ruse that Nancy would be volunteering with her mother to clean up at Valley High School, the young girl wasn’t expecting what the groups had planned.
Along with local businesses such as Kroger, the community created a magical party for Nancy with a Harry Potter theme. The Sorting Hat was there to help party-goers figure out their new house, be it Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Gryffindor, drinks changed colors and attendees were welcomed through Platform 9 3/4 to Hogwarts. Children even got to visit Ollivanders to get their very own wands.
“I really was not expecting this,” Nancy said. “I like it a lot. I’m mostly excited, surprised, and, like, all around happy to be here.”
Metro ABC employees brought their families, as did almost every division within the LMPD and PRFP, so Nancy had plenty of people who would become her new friends, including an LMPD K9 named Buster.
Renee Murphy, a spokeswoman for Jefferson County Public School, said that she has reached out to the family to see how they can help to resolve any problems involving bullying at Nancy’s school.
