A Cafeteria Worker Was Fired For Giving Out Free Lunch, So José Andrés Is Trying to Hire Her

Cue the awws. Celebrity chef and all-around wonderful human being José Andrés took to Twitter May 17 to offer a former cafeteria worker, Bonnie Kimball, a job. The Mascoma Valley Regional High School staffer was reportedly fired after giving free food to a student-even though the teenager in question paid back his lunch balance the next day.
The long and short of it is this: Kimball was fired following the incident and then offered her job back. After the story went viral, that is. Given the circumstances (i.e. the school was straight up wrong), Kimball turned her former employer down. "They're not doing it for me, they are doing it to save face," Kimball told CNN.
Enter José Andrés. Who, as I'm sure you've heard, is a generous gem of a man. His non-profit organization World Central Kitchen has fed a devastated post-hurricane Puerto Rico, furloughed federal workers, Mexican migrants, and more. Given this, he wanted to help Kimball, too. "The hero is Bonnie Kimball!" he wrote on Twitter. "If she needs a job we have openings at @thinkfoodgroup if you know her, let her know!"
Though we're still waiting to hear whether or not the offer has reached Kimball, Andrés' heartwarming offer sparked quite the response. "Brother, your offer brought tears to my eyes in a world now infected by greed and selfishness," one fan wrote. "Two of her co-workers resigned in protest. I’m sure they’re looking for jobs as well!" another suggested. A former customer even justified his pricey dinner bill because of Andrés continued kindness. "This is why I don't feel bad paying $300 for tapas and wine at Jaleo," he added.
Here's hoping Kimball joins the Think Food Group!
