Calvin Klein stockings cost $16, while its 'stocking sweater' sells for $1,150. But why?
Calvin Klein has created the perfect sweater for that person who in winter tends to keep a warm torso but get really cold arms. And if no one has that problem… well then, join the very confused club.
Calvin Klein’s Fall 2017 has hit stores, and it offers a few items we don’t quite understand — primarily, the Varsity Sleeve Stocking Top. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a sweater with chunky varsity-jacket-style sleeves and a body made out of stocking. Which means it’s barely there and completely sheer. They’re sold for men and women for $1,150 a pop. Then there’s the long-sleeved shirt for men that is pretty much just a stocking: the Sheer Graphic Intarsia top, somehow also in the knitwear section, costing $1,025.
We remember seeing these items on the runway for the brand’s Fall 2017 show. It was Raf Simons’s first with the brand, so we kind of looked past the sheer… well, sheerness as a possible Simons stunt. Just a designer trying to make a splash for his first show, right? And we were sort of right; the tops were much more sheer on the runway. But that’s not saying much, because we can still see pretty much everything on the models wearing the shirts on the website, save for the graphic intarsia top that’s sort of just nude colored — not so much nip exposure.
The best part is, you can buy a pair of actual Calvin Klein stockings from Bloomingdales for $14 to 16. So those sleeves must have cost a lot to craft in order to make up for the $1,000-plus difference. But no, actually, because they are selling the Varsity sleeves separately, basically leg warmers for your arms, and they cost under $500.
So here’s a tip if you are into this look but you can’t justify spending over $1,000 on sleeves connected by nylon: Buy the tights and the sleeves separately, and make the sweater yourself all for less than half the cost of the premade version.
