The Case for Situation-Specific Deodorant
The Case for Situation-Specific Deodorant
I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and the subject of deodorant came up (as it does). She told me she’d just tried a new one that she’d liked, so she put it in permanent rotation in her deodorant wardrobe. “Wait, what do you mean deodorant wardrobe?” I asked. The idea is simple: She has multiple deodorants that she uses based on what she’s doing or how she wants to feel. The catchy name surprised me, but the idea didn’t. I realized I’ve been doing the same thing for years.
For me, it started with the natural deodorant explosion a few years ago. I’m a fan of natural deodorants. I like the idea that I’m not slathering my pits in harmful chemicals (“harmful” being a subjective word here) and I do find that natural deodorants tend to smell better. But let’s get real: I’m a sweaty guy and sometimes I need a little extra sweat protection that a natural deodorant just can’t provide. So, I started switching up my deos depending on what my body needed.
You probably switch up your cologne depending on where you’re going, what you’re doing, and who you’re going to see, right? The idea of a deodorant wardrobe is the same—except with the added element of functionality.
There are no hard and fast rules to creating a deodorant wardrobe. Everyone’s body and olfactory tastes are different. Most of it comes through trial and error. I mostly think of what I’m going to do that day and whether I need sweat protection or not. Then I think about the scent and whether it’s going to compete with the cologne I’m going to wear. I also think about whether I need to take the deodorant with me or if I can get away with a one-and-done application. How you build your own deodorant wardrobe is up to you, but if you’re curious about where to start, here’s a peek at what I’m currently working with.
1) Advanced Protection 72 Hour Dry Spray
Degree
amazon.com
$24.99
Dry sprays aren’t as popular here in the U.S. as other parts of the world (yet), but I love them. They’re mess-free and I find that they hardly ever rub off on my black clothes or leave weird oil stains like a stick can. I spray on this potent antiperspirant before (and after) the gym every day because the rest of my body pours sweat, this somehow keeps my pits miraculously dry and fresh. My gym bag always—and I mean always—has a can of this in it.
2) Out West Natural Deodorant
Hume
amazon.com
$16.99
Out of all the natural deodorants I’ve tried, this is one of my favorites. The stick is clear and doesn’t leave weird streaks behind on my body or clothes. I’ve also been known to get a rash from some natural deodorants, but this one is gentle and has never left me irritated. And I can’t get enough of this scent. It smells like a fancy cologne with notes of cedarwood, leather, and tobacco. It mixes perfectly with the colognes I usually wear. I’ll throw this on most days when I’m okay sweating a little, but still need to smell great.
3) Blue Mesas Deodorant
Salt & Stone x Leon Bridges
saltandstone.com
$20.00
I always have a special-occasion deodorant at the ready for dates, events, and other times when you want to make an impression. I favor elevated scents, like the kind you’d spritz on as a cologne. This new deodorant is woody, smoky, and a little floral—and it smells absolutely incredible. In fact, it’s so nice that you may not even have to wear cologne at all (especially if you pair it with the body wash in the same scent). It’s new to my deodorant wardrobe, but it’s quickly earned a permanent spot.
4) Bergamot Deodorant
Malin + Goetz
amazon.com
$22.00
This deodorant has enjoyed a permanent place in my medicine cabinet for years because it’s just that damn good. It smells fresh and citrusy, and while it doesn’t keep me from sweating, it does a really good job of making sure my pits don’t stink. But, since I’ve already admitted to you that I’m a sweaty dude, I have to confess: It’s not strong enough for my body in hot weather. I reserve its use for colder months, when I’m wearing layers and I don’t start dripping sweat the minute I leave my front door.
5) Clinical Protection Clear Gel Deodorant
Gillette
amazon.com
$12.97
I’m going to get real with you: Sometimes I need to pull out the big guns. Any time I get anxious or stressed, like if I’m going to be talking in front of a group of people or doing anything on camera, I tend to pour sweat. I keep this extra-strength antiperspirant on hand for those exact moments. I apply the clear gel in the morning, let it dry (it can stain clothes), and then never worry about sweating through my shirt.
6) Natural Body Spray
OffCourt
amazon.com
$13.99
I tend to over-schedule myself, which can make for some frantic getting-ready moments—particularly if I have to get myself together on the go. That’s where this body spray slash deodorant comes in. It has the power to deodorize your pits and keep them fresh thanks to prebiotics. It also leaves a cologne-worthy scent behind. It’s so good that it could replace your fragrance completely.
7) Refillable Deodorant
Dove Men+Care
amazon.com
$24.62
There is nothing worse than trying to fit a full sized deodorant into your Dopp kit. And forget it if you’re trying to travel with a carry-on only (I hate checking a bag). Not only is this aluminum-free deodorant refillable, which helps cut down on plastic waste, but the reusable metal container is less than half the size of your typical stick. I keep one with my travel essentials at all times so I never forget it.
Cologne collecting? We all do it. But the real grooming pro move is treating your deodorant the same way.
