For as fun as it can be, picking out a paint color for kids' rooms can also be tricky. Along with selecting a hue that speaks to your child's unique taste, you have to also take into account whether or not the color will complement the other rooms in your home. "Kids thrive in colorful spaces and one thing we know for sure is that color has a huge impact on mood, feelings, and emotions—things that can be all over the place when kids' brains and bodies are growing at rapid rates," says Jessica Geller of Toledo Geller. "But it's also important to make sure there is some sense of flow in the home, so this color should not be out of left field." Looking for an inspiring shade that will feel cohesive with the rest of your space, and also meet your child's needs? Ahead, paint experts share their best tips for bridging this gap.

Stay Neutral
Most homes have neutral palettes, says Nicole Gibbons of Clare, who suggests sticking with a more subdued shade for a kid's room. "Pick a neutral paint color that feels cohesive with the rest of the home's scheme, but throw in a fun punch of color through bedding and accessories," she advises. "Also, black and white pair well with any neutral palette and make for a bold and unique color combination in a kid's room!"
Consult Your Kids
A kid's room is both your—and your child's—opportunity to experiment with playful shapes and shades, which is why Annie Sloan, the inventor of Chalk Paint, says you should ask them for assistance when making a selection. "Consult your children before you begin the process," she says. "Find out which colors and elements your children like from other rooms in the home, and incorporate those touches to create coherence."
Go Blue
Searching for an eye-catching kids room color that won't disrupt the overall vibe of your home? Gibbons says you can't go wrong with blue. "When people do opt for color in their home, blues tend to be very popular," she says. "Any shade of blue or aqua will feel vibrant and youthful while still creating a sense of calm (for when it's closer to bedtime)."
Consider Colorful Furniture
If a bold color won't complement the predominate palette of your space, try employing colorful furniture instead. "When painting kids' bedrooms, we opt to let the furnishings pop in order to keep the walls more consistent with the rest of the home," says Virginia Toledo of Toledo Geller. "This means whites or neutrals, and when we do use color on the walls, it's a tint of the color, as opposed to being super chromatic."
Play Up Similar Tones
To ensure that a kid's space flows with the rest of the house, Gibbons recommends playing off the tones of colors that are featured prominently throughout it. "For example, if you use a lot of different shades of green in your home, opt for kid's room color in a variant shade of green, or even a complementary shade of blue," she explains.
