Chrissy Teigen Donates $200,000 to Bail Out Protestors After George Floyd's Death
Chrissy Teigen is donating $200,000 "to the bail outs of protestors across the country."
Following the death of George Floyd, who was killed when a police officer knelt on his neck, protests have been taking place nationwide.
Teigen doubled her initial donation of $100,000 after getting harassed on Twitter.
Earlier this week, George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man from Minneapolis, Minnesota, was tragically killed after a police officer pinned down the victim's neck with his knee.
Celebrities including Lady Gaga and Beyoncé have thrown their support behind protestors, and encouraged the public to sign a petition to demand justice for George Floyd. Chrissy Teigen is also showing her support by pledging money to bail out protestors who get arrested.
The Cravings author initially tweeted, "In celebration of whatever the fuck maga night is, I am committed to donating $100,000 to the bail outs of protestors across the country." Following some widespread harassment, Teigen doubled down on her original pledge and tweeted, "Ooo they might need more money then. Make it $200,000."
Teigen refused to back down when she started getting intense criticism from Trump supporters on Twitter. She wrote, "Timeline a maga shit show. Oh fuckin well," and began retweeting offensive posts from critics. Teigen explained, "stay out of my mentions and I won’t respond. I don’t name search so feel free to talk about me in that way. you’re mad because your time is fucking up, people are tired of your racist asses and people are mad as shit. I’d be scared too."
As noted by People, a large group of celebrities have already donated to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, a nonprofit that helps people meet bail if they can't afford it. So far, Steve Carell, Seth Rogen, Jameela Jamil, Kehlani, Janelle Monáe, and Don Cheadle have all pledged money to the fund.
