Cleveland airport shuts down water fountains after several passengers fall ill on Tampa-bound flight

Several water fountains at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport have been shut down after numerous passengers onboard a Tampa-bound flight fell ill on Tuesday.

Passengers on Frontier Airlines flight 1397 were kept on the plane for an hour and a half after landing at Tampa International Airport while 6 people were removed from the aircraft by medical personnel. According to a now-deleted Instagram post by passenger Sandra Palomino, travelers were awaiting clearance by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and were eventually deplaned at 4:30 PM EST.

Janet Scherberger, a spokeswoman for Tampa International Airport, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that none of the passengers on the Frontier flight were transported to local hospitals from the airport, and all 266 people from the flight had left the airport by 5:00 PM EST.

Representatives from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport didn’t immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment. However, an airport spokeswoman told CNN that a number of water fountains have been shut down as a precaution, and the water will be tested.

Frontier Airlines has yet to respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment, but provided the following statement to Tampa news station WFLA on the incident:

During Frontier flight 1397 from Cleveland to Tampa this afternoon, six passengers became ill. The aircraft was met by local emergency medical services upon arrival in Tampa. Those passengers displaying symptoms were evaluated by medical staff before being released. All other passengers were released after a brief holding period. The cause of the illness remains under investigation. Passenger safety is Frontier’s number one priority.

Officials have not disclosed symptoms experienced by passengers. However, WFLA reported that healthy passenger Tiffany McKinney, said fellow travelers who fell ill “were coming out of nowhere. Just throwing up.”
