Do you know which colors look best on you? You might have an idea of which colors complement your skin tone or result in an uptick in compliments, but based on my FYP, many people have taken the fashion color trends for 2024 further than that. Personal color analysis has taken over TikTok. The videos typically include a person sitting in a chair while a color analyst lays pieces of colored fabric around their shoulders. As a viewer, you can usually immediately tell which colors complement the subject as they get categorized as a spring, summer, fall, or winter palette with a warm or cool tone.
The process may sound complicated but the entire point of the analysis is to help guide the subject’s color choice when it comes to clothing and makeup. One of my favorite parts of watching these videos is seeing someone light up when an unexpected color is draped around their shoulders. It turns out that yellow looks great on more people than I’d anticipated.
The fall 2024 collections from Fashion Week were filled with vibrant, unexpected pops of color. I’ve never thought to wear creamy blue during the cooler months, but after seeing the Louis Vuitton’s presentation, I’m certainly planning on it. Designers also played with shades of green, pink, orange, and even white.
If you’re eager to get a jump start on these color trends, fall is the ultimate opportunity. The first cool days are such an opportunity to celebrate.
1. Bright Red
The fall/winter runways of Carolina Herrera, Bottega Veneta, and Balmain had us seeing red…for good reason. The bold, bright hue dominated the catwalks, covering gowns, pants, coats, and more—clearly a sign to add the color to our fall wardrobes. Red’s reign should come as no surprise, considering the color was big for spring as seen on the spring/summer 2024 runway of Ralph Lauren and Burberry.
Enza Costa Ribbed Jersey Dress
On Sale 50% off
Long cardigans were all the rage a few seasons ago, and the look is still quite popular. The hype is credited to the silhouette’s versatility. You can wear the style as a dress or open with a white t-shirt and jeans. This fall, try it for date night with pointed-toe black boots.
Brandon Blackwood Luna Shoulder Bag
Red can be intimidating, so the best way to ease into the hue is with accessories. This Brandon Blackwood design is sleek, bold, but feels classic and timeless. It can serve as a statement piece for almost any outfit.
2. Not-So-Boring Brown
Brown has been the trending neutral for a handful of seasons now as a soft, ’90s-inspired alternative to black. Even as black comes back into the picture, cool-toned browns and browns so dark they could be mistaken for black, still have a bit more to give. Fashion house’s like Saint Laurent proved that the color is far from boring and can even be quite dramatic.
Pistola Denim Dark Roast High Rise Jeans
Whenever there’s a chance to spice up your denim rotation, go after it—especially with these Dark Roast jeans from Pistola Denim. This is a low-lift way to hop on the brown color trend because jeans are a type of pant we all own and love to style. You can dress theses up with a pointed-toe pump or with sneakers and a slouchy sweater.
J. Crew Berkeley Bucket Bag
Nail two trends in one with this J.Crew Berkeley Bucket Bag. The style was big on the fall/winter 2024 runways with labels including Ulla Johnson and Schiaparelli unveiling different iterations of the look during Fashion Week. The color is spot on for the season, and suede is also everywhere.
3. Burnt Orange
According to Adobe and the design tool Figma, burnt orange is a tone that is stimulating and “evokes a sense of security and relaxation.” The shade is noticeable due to its richness, but calm and inviting due to it being closely associated with autumn leaves and pumpkins. Burnt orange dresses, two-pieces, and shearling jackets were seen on the fall/winter 2024 runways of Hermès, Bottega Veneta, and Christian Siriano, styled with shades of brown and red.
Paltò Felted Maxi Coat
On Sale 45% off
The only good thing about cooler temperatures is statement outerwear. It’s easier to play around with colors and trends when you have more clothes to work with. This orange Paltò maxi coat is perfect for fall and winter. Style it with a plush brown sweater, wide-leg blue jeans, and brown pointed-toe boots.
Elisa Johnson Jane Sunglasses
When it comes to transitioning our wardrobe for fall, we often think about pants, jackets, sweaters, scarves, and bags—but other accessories like hats and sunglasses are just as important. Topping off an outfit with a pair of sunnies in a burnt orange hue can easily make an outfit look and feel more autumnal.
4. Classic Khaki
Khaki is a timeless neutral. Even if you’re not a big fan of khaki pants, luxury labels like Zenga, Balmain, and Dior have refreshed the classic hue for fall—helping us discover new ways to style and wear it. Not only does a khaki jacket pair with practically everything, it’s buildable, meaning you can use it as the base of your outfit, adding on color and texture for completion.
Abercrombie Drop-Waist Midi Dress
Don’t let the light color scare you, khaki-colored pieces are great for fall. This Abercrombie drop-waist dress would pair well with black leather over the knee boots with a skinny heel. Throw a leather jacket or black blazer over your shoulder, and you’re good to go. This dress is also a wardrobe staple because it works with every season due to the cotton fabric and open-back construction.
Gap Trench Coat
On Sale 60% off
There’s no way we’d push khaki on you and not also push you to buy a trench coat. Trench coats are a wardrobe staple and have been in style for decades. Throw this over a slip dress styled with ballet flats or on top of a white sweater and black trousers. Trench coats are functional, versatile and flattering. You can store what you need in the pockets, cinch in your waist with the belt, and stay warm amid changing temperatures and rain showers due it being made of water-resistant cotton.
5. Winter White
Contrary to an outdated fashion faux pas, white is never not in. For fall, so many designers—including Moncler—sent crisp white and creamy looks down the runway. A color normally reserved for bridal and Easter, whites and icy silvers offer a bright, high contrast alternative to the traditional fall shades.
The Frankie Shop Gabrielle Knit Skirt
There’s something so elegant and clean about a white sweater, so this knit skirt is the perfect way to reimagine an old classic. The high-waist silhouette and pleated design makes it flattering and fun for fall, winter, and spring.
Sam Edelman Hazel Pump
Through the years, white shoes have gotten a bad rep, but when styled right they are *chef’s kiss*. To me, nailing an outfit with a white pointed-toe pump comes down to balance. I suggest pairing these with wide-leg jeans, that way they peak out at them, creating fun dimension. You can also wear this with the above skirt and a coordinating white knit top, creating a monochrome ensemble.
6. Moss Green
Green is supreme this fall, according to brands like Burberry, Gucci, and Ferragamo. The warm hue feels cozy yet sexy and very sophisticated. The shade is also flattering on almost all skin tones, particularly melanated complexions.
Pistola Lennon High Rise Pants
On Sale 73% off
We can assume that the Ferragamo leather pants in the image above costs at least $1,000, so we found these Pistola pants, which for under $50. If you aren’t familiar with the brand, Pistola offers high quality denim at an affordable price point.
On Sale 40% off
A knee-high boot is always a good idea. Try out the beloved style in one of fall’s hottest colors. Don’t know how to style them? Don’t worry. Because the color is so warm, start with neutrals. These boots would like nice with a cream sweater dress, dark blue jeans and a white button-up shirt, or a gray sweater and a coordinating satin skirt.
7. Creamy Blues
Rich, saturated blues paired with neutrals were all over runways for fall. Especially with a neutral like brown, blue is such a winner (if you watched YouTube makeup girls, you might remember MAC pigment Blue Brown). Then, picking the right blue is all in your undertones.
Ruslan Baginskiy Baker Boy Cap
In addition to staying on top of color trends, we’re urging you to lean into accessorizing this fall. Go for that bracelets, the earrings, the necklaces, the sunglasses, and that hats—even all together. This super unique Ruslan Baginskiy Baker Boy Cap is a fun way to enhance an outfit in a way that doesn’t feel busy or overwhelming.
Emi Jay Sweetheart Clip
Hair accessories are all the rage, especially claw clips. This cutie from Emi Jay features tiny tones and a depiction of angle wings, which will give your lazy-girl updo a little drama.
8. Powder Pink
Soft shades are taking over 2024—even for fall and winter. Powder pink was a refreshing site on the Stella McCartney runway, proving that pastels aren’t only reserved for spring. The idea of incorporating lighter shades into your fall wardrobe may make the days feel less cold.
Zara Tailored Blazer
We get it, it may take some convincing for you to wear this color during fall. If you’re worried about looking to springy, contrast this piece with darker pieces like dark-wash jeans or black trousers.
Max Mara Teddy Crossbody Bag
On Sale 40% off
If you’re still unsure about powder pink, consider rocking a textured bag in the hue, like this Max Mara Teddy Crossbody bag. The fuzzy fabric gives off warm, cozy vibes.
9. Graceful Gray
Gray makes everything look polished and complete. It is both a minimalist and maximalist dream because the shade can worn on its own for a subtle and elegant look, and it can also serve as a base for statement colors like bright reds (as seen on the Brandon Maxwell runway above), cobalt blues, and glamorous reds.
H&M Pleated Mini Skirt
I’m sure you recall the tennis skirt era. Well, our take on the trend for fall is: the pleated mini skirt. This one screams dark academia. It’s demure, it’s cutesy, and a little spooky.
H&M Sweater Vest
Pair this sweater vest with the skirt above, or wear with black leather pants and a statement pump.
