The Couple From That 'America's Got Talent' Trapeze Fall Explains What Went Wrong
Mary and Tyce, the trapeze couple that fell on America's Got Talent, knew that going into the Judge Cuts round was going to require them to really step up their game, so they decided to make the already-challenging trapeze act even more so. Tyce was going to do the routine blindfolded, which mean everything was dependent on verbal cues.
"We have a music cue that I'm waiting for, but I also give Mary a verbal cue," Tyce explained to Entertainment Tonight. "What happens is, when she falls, when she lets go, I have to place my hands directly in the right spot to catch her feet at the right time or I miss her."
Because of the crowd cheering for them (which they're very thankful for and appreciative of) Mary couldn't hear Tyce's cue, causing her to plunge toward the stage. You can watch it in this video.
Tyce started "freaking out" when he felt Mary slipping through his hands. "You can see in the video, she was already gone, but I have this, like, last effort to still try and get her," he said. "And that feeling is just terrifying. I mean, it was miserable. I felt like it lasted so long. It was really uncomfortable."
In their years of doing trapeze together, they've fallen other times, but it never gets any less scary, Tyce said. Mary knows a specific position for making sure she doesn't break her neck on the fall.
"I'm thinking, 'Can I get in that position fast enough so that I don't get hurt?'" she said. "Because even when you're trained to fall, sometimes you don't get to the position you need to fast enough and you can get seriously hurt. I've had injuries before from that."
Mary said as soon as she realized she was okay, her first concern was seeing their two-year-old son. "I try not to be so emotional, but when my son gets involved, that's when I just can't control it."
