CoverGirl’s Newest Model, Nura Afia, Wears a Hijab: ‘It Feels So Surreal’
Until recently, seeing a male in a beauty campaign or a woman wearing a hijab in a television commercial was so rare as to be hard to imagine. But just a month after breaking boundaries by announcing the addition of their first male ambassador, James Charles, to their roster, CoverGirl is continuing to diversify the world of beauty: This time, with Nura Afia, who wears a hijab in the brand’s newest commercial for their So Lashy Mascara.
“I’m so excited to be a part of CoverGirl’s new campaign,” Afia said in a statement. “It feels so surreal. Honestly, growing up and being insecure about wearing the hijab I never thought I would see Muslim women represented on such a large scale. It means the world to me and I’m so honored to be a part of this campaign with CoverGirl.”

Afia poses alongside Charles, Katy Perry, Sofia Vergara and more in CoverGirl’s new TV commercial, which will air on November 14th. And while she’s the first to wear a hijab in the brand’s commercials, she’s thrilled to be joining an already diverse group of existing celebrity ambassadors.
“It’s important that beauty brands like CoverGirl cast a diverse range of people for their campaigns,” Afia adds. “CoverGirl is known for casting huge boundary breakers like Queen Latifah, Katy Perry, Janelle Monae, and Ellen DeGeneres. I couldn’t be happier, I love CoverGirl as a brand and everything they stand for — they really believe in beauty for all.”
